California officially becomes first in nation mandating solar power for new homes
Orange County Register ^ | December 5, 2018 | Jeff Collins

California became the first state in the nation on Dec. 5 to require homes built in 2020 and later be solar powered.

...the California Building Standards Commission (BSC) voted unanimously to add energy standards approved last May by another panel to the state building code.

“These provisions really are historic and will be a beacon of light for the rest of the country,” said Kent Sasaki, one of six commissioners voting for the new energy code. “(It’s) the beginning of substantial improvement in how we produce energy and reduce the consumption of fossil fuels.”

The new provisions are expected to dramatically boost the number of rooftop solar panels in CA. ...builders took out permits for 115,000 new homes in 2017, half for single-family homes.

Wednesday’s action upholds a vote by another body, the California Energy Commission, seeking to fulfill a decade-old goal to make the state reliant on cleaner, alternative energy. The energy panel’s vote was subject to final approval by the BSC.

The BSC was limited to reviewing the energy panel’s rulemaking process, not the content of the standards. Commissioners said the process was more than sufficient, with 35 meetings, hearings and webinars held over a 15-month period. The energy panel received more than 3,000 comments from over 100 stakeholders, officials said.

While nobody spoke Wednesday in opposition to the new provisions, the commission received more than 300 letters from around the state opposing the solar mandate because of the added cost.

Energy officials estimated the provisions will add $10,000 to the cost of building a single-family home, about $8,400 from adding solar and about $1,500 for making homes more energy-efficient. But those costs would be offset by lower utility bills over the 30-year lifespan of the solar panels.

California has become the junk pile of garbage and corruption of America. Getting ready for a civil war and this State will be wiped out.

> The estimate of adding $10,000 to the price of a new average single family home is utterly ridiculous. <

Yes, but the legislators will be getting increased campaign contributions from the solar panel lobby. So it all evens out in the end.

I’m guessing burning solar cells are not good for the environment.

This is just the first step. Eventually they will probably require solar be installed whenever a property is sold. Or whenever any building permit is pulled for any repair / maintenance/ remodeling.

Camels nose in the tent, foot in the door, whatever metaphor you like, that’s what’s going on here.

Actually I like the idea of solar. Somebody I know just got solar, and has seen great savings on utilities. But the issue here is, it should be everyones freedom to choose solar if they want, or not if they choose to decline. The issue is that this is being force fed on us.

Dow Corning sells roofing shingles that are solar powered.

...

So does Tesla, but the total cost is a lot more than $10,000.

California is riding the crest of a giant historical tidal wave of debt, which government, and the leftist and social-engineers who control it, benefits from.

KearnyIrish is exactly right...this is a HUGE problem for the safety of firefighters. Google firefighter solar panels. If their safety is put at risk, structures WILL burn.

I dont know how they compare price wise to solar panels but they seem to offer a similar look.

By accident, I hope, you've hit on the most important element of this oligarchy ruling.

It's not about how well it performs and the economic burden citizens will be saddled with.

It's about how it looks, virtue signaling to the nth degree and cost be damned.

Liberal democrats now have a super majority in the California State House and Governor elect Gavin Newsom being an ultra liberal communist, 2019 will be a real losing doozie for freedom loving patriots in that state

Solar shingles have been a dream for a long time, but still aren't ready for prime time. See Bloomberg article "Did Elon Musk Forget About Buffalo?" for a good review of Tesla's inability to deliver. The installed their shingles on a modest suburban house in San Jose at a cost of $100,000 and it took two weeks. Granted it's a demonstration house, but still that is a long way from commercial success targets.

From the firemen who won’t expose themselves to this - they’re terrified of them.
