Solar panels DO NOT last 30 years. They fail far before that.

The disposal of used solar panels is very difficult, as they are considered HAZARDOUS WASTE.

I remember that commercial airline pilots have been having problems with temporary blindness from the reflection off solar panels on the land side of LAX. NOT funny.

SO—Now, more homes will have to have solar.

Also- think you are going to have a very cheap power source & that you will be able to push the excess back to the power company? Wonderful.....

Be prepared to get a 1099at the end of each year for the value of the electricity YOU SOLD to the power company. The IRS also gets a copy-—so you have to pay taxes on that money ‘you saved’.

AND——that $10,000 EXTRA in the original build adds $125 to the property taxes right off the bat. Prox average of property tax in Calif at 1% plus local bond issues== 1.25%

There are people here who reduce their summer electric bill from $300+ per month in the summer to around $20-$50.

And the utilities are required by law to buy any excess you produce.”””

AND many of those power companies are now issuing 1099’s to those home owners. Technically, they are selling a product to the power company, so I think this is entirely legal.

So-—be prepared to add those 1099’s to your income for taxes.......

AND—those Federal subsidies expire shortly.

But they are still resistant to nuclear power generation.

And SMUD is required by the California "Renewable Portfolio Standards" laws (RPS) to buy the power from you at very high rates, far above market-clearing rates.

If solar was economically competitive, it would stand on its own feet and not need RPS laws.

Yes, you can indeed save money IF you are willing to saddle other people with paying for your T&D costs and backup generation costs. Personally, I am ethically opposed to that and refuse to buy any solar for our house (I also refuse to uglify out little ranch home with solar panels).

From the California PUC site:

  • The California RPS program was established in 2002 by Senate Bill (SB) 1078 (Sher, 2002) with the initial requirement that 20% of electricity retail sales must be served by renewable resources by 2017.
  • The program was accelerated in 2006 under SB 107 (Simitian, 2006), which required that the 20% mandate be met by 2010.
  • In April 2011, SB 2 (1X) (Simitian) was signed into law, which codified a 33% RPS requirement to be achieved by 2020.
  • In 2015, SB 350 (de León, 2015) was signed into law, which mandated a 50% RPS by December 31, 2030. SB 350 includes interim annual RPS targets with three-year compliance periods. In addition, SB 350 requires 65% of RPS procurement must be derived from long-term contracts of 10 or more years.
  • In 2018, SB 100 (de León, 2018) was signed into law, which again increases the RPS to 60% by 2030 and requires all state's electricity to come from carbon-free resources by 2045. SB 100 will take effect on January 1, 2019.
If solar were really competitive in the free market, would ANY of these laws be required? Would our betters have been required to tighten the screws on us peons FOUR times over 12 years? Obviously we little people are not behaving a our betters desire, so the thumb screws continue to get torqued down.

The genius of actions like these spread over 12 years is they don't hit us all at once with the BIG WHAMMY like Macron did in France. He should have been happy to spread those petrol price hikes out over 12 long years. Then those frogs would have gotten boiled and not felt a thing.

...the already non-existent affordable housing in California goes completely extinct

Nah, local communities will simply extract more Danegeld from the builders for "below market rate units." The builders have infinitely deep pockets, right? It's just OPM, after all.

I want to see arrests for corruption.

Who paid money to those who voted? Basically we are forced to buy thd solar industries products, instead of other alternatives.

A scam. Curruption plain and simple

Next, they’ll require anyone selling their home to install solar, first. (Just to get back at those selling out and leaving the state).

Energy officials estimated the provisions will add $10,000 to the cost of building a single-family home, about $8,400 from adding solar and about $1,500 for making homes more energy-efficient. But those costs would be offset by lower utility bills over the 30-year lifespan of the solar panels.

I guess that means they will add $50K to a 1500 sq ft home and never pay for themselves...it's how Kalifornia rolls.

Government forcing you to buy products you don’t want...seems to be a lot of that happening the past 20 years...light bulbs, tiny cars, health insurance, solar panels.

Somebody else pointed that out up-thread. You can see that coming. That is exactly how government in Commiefornia works. The next step will be a requirement to add solar panels if you do a major remodel. Then a minor remodel. Then ANY job where a permit is pulled on your property. Then finally you can’t transfer title in a sale unless the house has solar.

Palo Alto passed a similar law requiring every new house or remodel project to include an electric car charger circuit and controls in the garage, even if you don’t own an electric car and have no intention of ever buying one.

You are right. They will do it the same way they have more or less outlawed old wood stoves and pellet stoves. We can’t sell our home with the pellet stove that is in it now because it is not EPA compliant. It’s too old. We either have to make it inoperable by filling it with cement or replace it with a new EPA compliant one.
I like the idea of solar but there are reasons why people don’t have it. Our house is paid for and I refuse to let some solar company put a lien on it to lease solar. Yeah we could buy it and make payments but I haven’t seen that it would save us much money for the trouble. We have done everything there is to cut our utility bills where now they’re pretty reasonable....at least for California. We put in new windows and doors, new ac, etc. etc. And Hubby is 67 so I don’t see the payback happening. lol
We won’t do solar until it becomes cost efficient for us....or we are forced.

Do only wealthy environuts vote there? Why in the world would the people of that state continue to vote for pols who do this stuff? I just don’t get it. California is now the poorest state in the Union. Apparently, it’s also the dumbest. (Apologies to any FReepers who still live there).

“...or we are forced.”

You probably should look at it like this: “or we are forced TO LEAVE CALIFORNIA.”

We bought a vacation home in Idaho and the insanity of CA was a major factor in our desire to get out of this nutty place.

Like so many states, the very wealthy congregate in a small portion of the state and dictate their horrendous policies to the rest of the state. You see it all over the country - Chicago, New York, Baltimore, Seattle, Sacramento/San Francisco/LA, Portland.

Just wait until they pass a constitutional amendment abolishing the Electoral College system.

Still, if it’s now the poorest state in the Union, there should be more people negatively affected. You’d think they’d know basic math, and put 2 and 2 together. But, you can’t overestimate the stupidity of the uninformed voter.

I don’t think we’re leaving. Hubby and I are at odds on where we want to go. I don’t want to live in some backwater where I don’t know anyone. That’s exactly where he wants to live. So we’ll stay put where we have family.

Fortunately, my wife fell in love with North Idaho and we bought a place only a mile from where my grandparents retired! We had been visiting my uncle in southern Idaho for 38 years, so she knew that area well. I took her to the panhandle about five years ago and she immediately took to it.
