I thought it was because education back then focused a lot on Greek and Roman times.
Probably not mutually contradictory.
I mean we were using the Greek and Roman ideas of democracy and a Republic for our politics, architecture often reflects politics, indeed public buildings are, along with coinage, the main way a nation projects and envisions itself. The Greek and Roman ideas of an educated citizenry- all of a piece.

Greek Revival was the architectural fashion at the time when the vast majority of them were built, thats why. Once established it then became the look and so has been replicated long after Greek Revival ceased being the architectural fashion of the time.
And when 0bama won the presidency did you notice him among the Greek columns >without< his family with him? Just he and he alone.
That stage set made me think of those early Star Trek battles that hidden aliens would stage between Kirk and some strange creature. Totally contrived and vaguely threatening because you just know no good is going to come from such artifice. It foreshadows the big lie.

In years past, buildings were architecturally interesting and beautiful, not steel and glass monoliths.
Because it doesn’t look “dated”, like the Smithsonian Gothic.
Well, when you want people to worship a new “political messiah” you must create an almost deity-like presence.

Starting with the Bauhaus School, public art went into a decline so as to intentionally depress the "masses" for better political manipulation.
A building based on a Greek Temple is inspiring. The messes that are "public housing" buildings built after WWII are not.
Or the new US Embassy in the UK, for that matter.
