Yellow Jacket' protests in France leave gas stations running dry; Paris riots worst since 1968

PARIS — "Yellow Jacket" protesters blocking access to 11 fuel depots belonging to one of the world's biggest oil companies have left gas stations running dry in France.

At least 75 of the company's 2,200 gas stations were out of fuel, a spokesman for energy giant Total said Monday.

For more than two weeks, protesters angry over gas taxes and the high cost of living have been blocking roads across France, impeding access to fuel depots, shopping malls and some airports.

Riot police were overrun on Saturday as protesters brought chaos to Paris' fanciest neighborhoods, torching dozens of cars, looting boutiques and smashing up luxury private homes and cafes in the worst disturbances the capital has seen since 1968.

More than 100 people were injured in the French capital and 412 arrested over the weekend.

The "Yellow Jacket" revolt erupted on Nov. 17 and poses a formidable challenge to President Emmanuel Macron as he tries to counter a plunge in popularity over his economic reforms, which are seen as favoring the wealthy.

The "Yellow Jacket" activists are named after the neon vests French drivers are obliged to carry in their vehicles in the case of roadside emergencies.

The movement began online as an impromptu rebellion against higher fuel prices but has morphed into a broader outpouring of anger over the squeeze that living costs are putting on middle-class household budgets.

Their core demand is a freeze on further planned tax increases on gas and diesel — the next is due in January — and measures to help bolster spending power.

But many have also called for Macron to quit.

Public support for the "Yellow Jackets" remains high, with seven-in-10 people backing their protest, according to a Harris Interactive opinion poll conducted after Saturday's unrest.

Perhaps the solution is for Switzerland to invade and take over both France and Germany.

However, what would Switzerland do with them???

I am a few years older than you.

I look back at stuff about the 1960’s shake my head and think “My God, I actually survived that time in human history!”

It had to be a terrifying experience for my parents to be raising children during all that.

RE: There’s absolutely no scientific evidence whatsoever that raising taxes prevents global warming.

“Their warped reasoning seems to be — raising fuel taxes will discourage drivers from buying conventional cars that ran on fossil fuels ( e.g. oil ). This will then cause users to purchase more environmentally friendly cars ( e.g. Hybrids and Electric ), and doing so will, reduce burning of carbon, which will of course help to prevent global warming and climate change.”

C’est vrai.

In 1990 Bush raised gas tax by 50%, in 1993 Clinton raised it by another 25%.

Since then, all the “experts” claim global warming has not been stopped and is getting worse.

So there’s actual evidence that raising taxes makes global warming worse.

“The elite think in terms of what could happen a century from now, but the poor ordinary folks think of it in terms of how it affects their livelihood today.”

Exactly! There was one yellow jacket protestor who put it very succinctly:

“The Elite worry about the End of the World, we worry about the end of the month.”

I love these yellow vesters. They are not only employing great strategy but they are working class men, many from outside of Paris, and very courageous. Here they would be Trump supporters. We should be taking notes.

I've enjoyed reading about these riots on some of the Lefty sites like DU. "We'll never solve climate change if people won't embrace higher gas prices!"

If it were white, SUV-driving, racist, transphobic, Trump-supporting Americans who were angry over gas prices, that would be one thing but that it's the French who won't accept this is very upsetting to the Left's worldview.

That's nearly - but not quite - 1 in every 30.

But I suppose that "29 out of 30 gas stations were open for business" isn't quite as dramatic.

Germany should invade

Yesterday, a FReeper wittier than I observed that France usually outsources burning Paris to Germany, and wondered why they were doing it in-house this time.

Made me laugh loud enough to wake the wife.

America suffers from YELLOW VEST creep. the plague is Americanized in the form of yellow T shirts. On a typical lunch day about a quarter to half of those eating are wearing the yellow

The Euro plague is here.....now

Charles De Gaulle was a giant compared to the mommy-challenged Macron. If the 1968 riots brought down De Gaulle, then Macron soon could be toast.

Takes just one no-confidence vote in the national assembly.

"...I can’t tell from the pictures..."

Exactly. Same with me. That is likely the conundrum that decent patriots are also facing in the streets of Paris tonight.
We want our leaders to be held accountable, yet if Muzzies are torching our houses, apartments, and cars...it gets challenging.
Especially if the filthy Muslims disguise themselves in the day-glo yellow garments like the others.

No.

The President is elected by the French people.

His party controls the National Assembly and the situation will likely continue to the end of Macron’s term.

Reducing presidential tenure from seven years to five years eliminated the threat of cohabitation because nowadays the President and Parliament are elected together.

Unsure if I follow your post.
You are saying we have a large number of patriots in our midst?

With what? Most of their tanks are in the shop.

Reverse gear worn out, all five of them.

Experts have told me that French tanks do have a forward gear just in case they are retreating in the direction the tank typically travels.

I wish I could work up empathy, but I just can’t.

No love here, either. They voted these globalist socialist regimes in time and again, which automatically negates their self righteous indignation.

Spending power? Spending power for who, the government?
