PLYMOUTH, Mass. (AP) — Thanksgiving is nothing to celebrate for Native Americans, who are gathering in the town where the Pilgrims settled for a solemn National Day of Mourning observance.

Thursday's noon gathering in downtown Plymouth, Massachusetts, will recall the disease, racism and oppression that the European settlers brought.

It's the 49th year that the United American Indians of New England have organized the event on Thanksgiving Day.

They Indians also joined with the French to attack the settlers. Losers of wars have never fared well, especially when stone age cultures rub up against industrialized cultures.

If something better could be done with respect to that (there are copious Federal lands) it would be good — such as tribal tied hunting and harvesting permits. For over a decade, Scouts of various kinds have borrowed from American Indian custom — it’s an irony if American Indians can’t exercise same, wasteful practices excluded.

American Indians have been pulled into both sides of colonial wars. This is such a cynical thing however understandable. “Why didn’t this self proclaimed Christian society live up to it instead of backsliding into base motives?” And to some extent it did.

The hypocritical nature of this allegedly Christian Society is a pervasive trait, even to this day. Sad but true.

If it had been Ghengis Khan or Tamerlane I wonder how the Native Americans would have fared? Poorly I would think.

Spare me the tears for the native Americans. They lost. They were lucky they weren’t eliminated. They have lands that are theirs...they have casinos everywhere...they run the bureau of indian affairs...they get welfare..they have it good. Spare me the tears.
