Stalemate at APEC Forum Over U.S.-China Trade Dispute: 'Entire World Is Worried'
The NYT ^ | November 18, 2018 | By Damien Cave

SYDNEY, Australia — The trade dispute between the United States and China has led to a standoff at a summit meeting of Pacific Rim leaders in Papua New Guinea, leaving the gathering of 21 nations without a joint closing statement on Sunday for the first time since the forum was founded.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, known as APEC, has not ended without a joint statement since 1989, when the forum was established in Australia. Experts said the stalemate would set up a high-stakes showdown at the Group of 20 conference in Argentina this month - which President Xi Jinping of China and President Trump are expected to attend - while intensifying frustration among countries caught in the crossfire.

"The entire world is worried," said Prime Minister Peter O'Neill of Papua New Guinea, after he confirmed that only a summary of discussion would be issued, not a joint statement.

Sorry to link to the NYT.

But on this one issue, I sort of agree with them.

China is BADLY taking advantage of America.

Badly. Our trade deficit with China is the largest in all recorded history. Ever. Between ANY two countries.

And it is getting ever worse.

Trump appears to be the very first American leader, who is actually on America's side.

Maybe because he cannot be bought.

Everyone else, has been selling us out, forever.

Way to go, Mr. President.

Draft versions of the communique seen by The Associated Press showed that the United States wanted strong language condemning unfair trade practices like those that it says China regularly deploys, including restricting market access and pushing foreign companies to hand over valuable technology.

The Chinese delegation sought to reaffirm its opposition to what it says are protectionism and unilateralism practices by the United States, especially the American trade tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of Chinese goods.

IMHO most comments and articles about the world worrying are Chinese inspired propaganda.

Maybe.

Except this is a big issue. Big.

President after president, in both parties, have been selling America down the river, for the entire last generation and a half.

Now, finally, we appear to have a president who will (finally) stand up for America.

It has been a long, long. Long. Long. Long.

Long...

Time this has happened, continuously. Year after year. After year.

Even though, nothing is really happening yet.

:D

It is in the strategic national interest of China to see DJT lose in 2020. I wonder what they see their options are?

“China is BADLY taking advantage of America.

I respectfully disagree. US policies enabled the genesis and everything that’s followed is a natural progression. I fault every president since Truman for kicking the can and, in the case of a handful of presidents, making it an order of magnitude worse.

The US has underwritten raising the standard of living of over a billion people overseas, including hundreds of millions of Chinese...all on the backs of our grandchildren.

I never authorized a red penny. A “correction” is long overdue. It will be much, much more painful later than just getting it over with now. This trade BS is all bluster; let’s talk about banking and those who control the purse-strings...

...THAT discussion will turn some people white, ironically.

But no: Let’s argue about tariffs and decades-old defective trade policy for the next 2 years.

He says once again, pausing for effect...

Our trade deficit is AWFUL.

China offers a haven for an American manufacturer. Our government subsidizes the moving of the plants to China. The business then uses slave labor to build the same product there, as they would here, and without taxes, unemployment, labor laws, and insurance costs. We then allow the product to be shipped here duty free. THIS is what passes for a free market to the majority of Congresscritters, and the MSM. Feinswine, Pelowsi, and the Clintons made their fortunes selling America out to the Red Chinese.

We finally have a President who says “bleep this bleep”, and he deserves every chance to straighten this out FOR AMERICAN WORKERS.

This is why I have supported Donald Trump as US president since before he even announced he was running.

This issue.

Right here.

In 1865 the United States was devestated by four years of Civil War. In 1900, only 35 years later, it owned the greatest industrial infrastructure on the planet, was the world’s leader in technology, had a rapidly growing middle class, and possessed a worl class navy. During the 35 year period, in which the US transitioned from the detestation of war to economic superpower, the US government maintained a protectionist trade policy. Throughout that time of rapid industrialization and technological progress the US imposed the highest protective tariffs in its history. High tariffs and duties fully funded the activities of the federal government including the development and maintenance of a powerful navy.

In the 28 year period from 1990 to 2018 we have seen the dismantling of the greatest industrial infrastructure on the planet in the name of free trade. The lowering of tariffs, quotas and duties has resulted in manufacturing and capital fleeing to other countries. Ironically those beneficiaries of US free trade policies do not reciprocate. They practice the mercantilist policies every great economic power in world history has used to achieve rapid economic growth and technological development.

The economy of 1990 was the product of 125 years of economic policies favoring domestic production and capital investment in the homeland. Do we return to a proven economic success formula or do we accept the current free traders mantra: “ those manufacturing jobs won’t come back” and “America’s best days are behind her”.

Trump’s tariffs haven’t even begun to be felt. It will take decades to undo the destruction of our economy and the journey back to prosperity will be painful for many who have profited from the current state. If a economy with 90 million unemployed working age people, anemic or no growth, declining middle class, and massive government deficits is appealing continue down the globalist path to third world status. If a vibrant high growth economy is more appealing, return to the policies that worked for England in the 18th and 19th centuries, the US in the 19th and 20th centuries, and China in the current era.

What about the hundreds of millions of Americans who've realized a higher standard of living by having to spend less of their income on goods?

Do you put any of the 'blame' on the vast majority of your fellow citizens, or just the boogymen?
