Marijuana legalization had a pretty good election night

Marijuana legalization had a very good election night on Tuesday.

The big news came from Michigan, which became the first state in the Midwest to legalize cannabis for recreational purposes. And it appears to have won by a fairly big margin: With 87 percent of precincts reporting, the “yes” vote got 56 percent of the vote — topping the “no” vote by 12 percentage points.

There were also a couple of medical marijuana victories in Missouri and Utah. Both states went Republican in state races (particularly the Senate), yet they still showed solid support for legalizing medical pot. The winning measure in Missouri got 66 percent of the vote, and the initiative in Utah is so far, with 95 percent of precincts reporting, at 53 percent.

The one bit of bad news for legal marijuana came from North Dakota, where voters rejected an initiative that would have legalized cannabis for recreational purposes. That measure got less than 41 percent support.

But the North Dakota loss was widely expected. North Dakota is very conservative; it was always very unlikely to fully legalize pot before, say, liberal New York and New Jersey. The measure’s chances were likely lowered further because it was very unusual: It would have legalized selling pot without any regulations, leaving it to the state’s lawmakers to quickly enact rules instead. Typically, marijuana legalization measures at least set up a regulatory framework for sales.

In short, marijuana legalization got three major wins and an expected loss on Tuesday.

Beyond the midterm elections, 2018 has been a big year for marijuana legalization. This year, California opened the world’s biggest legal marijuana market, Vermont legalized marijuana possession (becoming the first state to do so through its legislature), and Canada became the world’s first wealthy nation to fully legalize pot.

After Election Day, 10 states have legalized marijuana for recreational and medical uses, and 22 others have legalized only for medical purposes.

I understand that there are some possible medicinal factors to pot that should be studied & used.

I just don’t understand why everyone is so quick to want everyone else to get and be high. Sure, being intoxicated can be fun, but seriously - all the time?

CBD this, CBD that, pot this, pot that - the peer pressure to get on board with this MASS HIGH is AWFUL!

I wonder if Nancy Pelosi would give to Trump the opportunity to sign legislation that decriminalizes marijuana at the federal level. I doubt if she would. In her eyes anything that would make Trump look good is bad.

no, it’s as simple as this: people who want to smoke pot need to stop siphoning off enough votes from the republican so that a LIBERAL gets sent to congress.

I don’t really give a damn about pot one way or the other, but after watching this sh*t for about 10 or 12 years, you people can rot in hell for all I care.

“Gotta keep the masses high. That way they don’t pay attention to what gov is doing to them.”

Sounds good until you look at the fact that govt is not pushing legalization, but dragging their feet. 9 of 10 states that legalised did so by ballot, as did most medical mj programs. Prohibition is the favored policy of politicians and govt bureacrats.

Pot is going to be a liability for the GOP if they don’t pass legislation permitting it. In Michigan for example they had pot legalization on the ballot and it drove up Dem turn out. If the legislature had approved it first the ballot measure would have been irrelevant.

Yes but if they they put it on a the ballot then Dem was turnout will be high. Better to pass it as legislation.

I’ll just stick to a good single malt Scotch, it’s already legal and I have enough sense not to try to drive when I have imbibed.
Most pot smokers I have known seem to think it’s perfectly OK to get high then drive to get munchies, or get loaded while driving.
Bunch of Damn Idiots.

I was willing to give adults a chance on the Michigan vote.

But I will admit the NO side ran some really thoughtful internet ads, and I would have no issue voting to repeal it if they treat this new privilege irresponsibly.

and the Libertarian traitors to whom legal pot is sacred ground have, once again, provided the vote diversion that has sent numerous hyper-liberals to Congress

Was there any congressional race in which the Rat's margin of victory was less than the vote for the Libertarian candidate?

Using marijuana is not a "privilege" but a right, since it in and of itself violates no rights. And it's immoral to punish all marijuana users for the irresponsibility of some.

if Tobacco Smoke was injurious, there is still a lot to study about the long term effect of marijuana smoke

Should tobacco be banned because it's injurious?

People who smoke pot do not deserve to be in jail or prison, because they are not criminals.

You would be surprised at the real facts. Nobody is sitting in prison because they were caught with pot or smoking it.

The only ones in prison are the major traffickers, those who were charged with other crimes in addition to having pot in their possession, parolees busted for crimes with pot in their possession and tons of other associated crimes..........

Let me repeat myself: NOBODY IS IN PRISON OR JAIL FOR MERE POT POSSESSION ...........

And for the record, here in Michigan where marijuana was just legalized, it wasn't in state groups who gathered together to promote the passage of the bill but rather mega out state lobbyists who are representing groups who stand to make a fortune over its legalization and sale...........

Like Coors and Seagrams make big money from the sale of the drug alcohol?

In fact, https://www.realclearpolitics.com/elections/live_results/2018/house/ shows exactly 2 House races where the Rat won by less than the third-party total (Iowa 3 and NJ 3). In NJ the 'spoiler' was a Constitution Party candidate, whose views on marijuana I couldn't discover. In Iowa, the Rat would have lost IF all Libertarian votes went to the Pub AND no other third-party votes went Rat.

Well, we have some serious drug issues out there like fentanyl and pill mills but still 60% of our enforcement results are targeting pot. The differences now between the states are only exacerbating the widening net to ensnare folks, mainly our young.

I know the drug companies that dispense mood elevators like candy don't want legalization. Law enforcement and lawyers don't. So, on we go.
