Democrats really and sincerely see the threat of violent words and actions as coming from the right. It’s Mr. Trump—he’s hateful and has no respect and it sets a tone. He encourages fights at his rallies; he said the other night that a congressman who pushed around a reporter was his kind of guy. He calls the press the enemy of the people. He widens all divisions, mindlessly yet opportunistically. No surprise his adversaries are being sent bombs.
Republicans and the right truly, deeply see the threat as coming from the left. Rep. Maxine Waters and Sen. Cory Booker actually told crowds to get in Republicans’ faces; Hillary Clinton says you can’t treat them civilly. Republicans see the screamers and harassers at the Kavanaugh hearings, the groups swarming Republican figures when they dine in public, antifa. A man who wrote “It’s Time to Destroy Trump & Co.” on Facebook didn’t insult Rep. Steve Scalise last year; he shot and almost killed him. The intimidation is coming from the left.
Trump supporters don’t take him seriously when he issues his insults. He’s kidding; he doesn’t mean it; he’s Trump. You’re lying when you say he makes you afraid.
But the left finds him, and some of his allies, honestly—honestly—dangerous.
Just as the right finds Ms. Waters and Mr. Booker and Mrs. Clinton and the swarms and the hissers and antifa honestly—honestly—the threat.
Neither side appreciates—neither side credits—the anxiety the other side legitimately feels. They have no sensitivity to it. They had better get some.
When conservatives see a liberal or progressive not condemning Mr. Booker or Ms. Waters, they assume it’s because the liberal agrees with what they say—that intimidation is part of the plan.
There is too much blindness to how the other side is experiencing the situation.

To think I truly respected her opinions and writings, then she jumped the shark with Obama and has not been right since. Perhaps honestly thinking that Obama would solve America’s racial past crap really warped her mind.
At one time, she was a fighter along with her boss President Ronald Reagan. Too many years of sipping champagne cocktails with the other side has made her soft. She should have taken a few more pointers from her boss. He only rubbed elbows with the D.C. political swamp creatures when he had to get business done. Other than that, he was off to his California ranch to ride horses.
Let’s just call what Peggy is calling for, for what it is: the. The normalization and institutionalization of elitism as a governing principle.
There is no Bill if Rights under elitism but, instead, a Bill of Privileges.
Peggy and the media are the elite. Hollywood is the elite. The democrats are the elite. They have Privileges that you and I do not. The Quisling GOP types like Flake and McCain are the sub category elites who enjoy some of the privileges so long as they cooperate and/or are useful.
One of those privileges is immunity. The elite can use any heated, angry rhetoric they want. They can use whatever they want to demean and, now, physically harass those that are not elite and disagree with them.
You and I?!? We cannot even fight back in any way. To do so would infringe upon the Privileges granted to the elite. The second we fight back or defend ourselves we are stoking hate or WE are causing vilolence.
The elite have the privilege to accuse you of anything, label you the worst evil in the world and the second you hit back or defend yourself, then you are illegal and must be causing all the world’s evils.
I give as exhibit A the coverage of bombgate. No, we aren’t fighting back when someone does something so vile as to send bombs to someone. I speak, rather about the elite’s use of this to cast us as stoking hate that cause the bombs by? Why, by daring to speak out in any manner against the media. You and I and Trump made someone hate the media and the elites so much as to send them (fake) bombs. Hell, we are no longer a basket of deplorables but radicalized terrorists worthy of Al Queda.
How dare we not allow the elite media to lie, cheat, sensor and destroy lives in the process all because someone dares to disagree with their agenda!!!! See, that is their Privilege. And for us to call them on it is hate, inciting violence, illegal.
This is sick. Peggy and the rest of the elite can stick it. The elite have brought this fight in an attempt to de facto subjugate us. We aren’t buying it. Most importantly, Trump isn’t buying it.
I recall there was a very narrow window of time when I thought Peggy Noonan was okay...probably thirty years ago, but that was simply because I was viewing her in a very narrow context.
I easily see her at the Leftist cocktail parties in Manhattan, tsk tsking with Leftists, saying to them (as they nod their heads in sage agreement) “Yes, things are not good. If only we could meet in the middle somewhere and talk about things, we would be so angry and at each other’s throats.”
The leftists would agree with her, because in their minds, their way is the only way, and if we surrender all ground on their side and meet them in “the middle”, they will “meet” us there but only without surrendering any of their side. Then, in their view, the NEW far right will be what the middle used to be.
It is a one way ratchet.
Hillary Clinton was right for once: We cannot have civility with those who want to destroy what we believe in. They believe in things that are fundamentally antithetical to our beliefs, and want to destroy what we believe in...personal responsibility and freedom, the right to defend ourselves with firearms if need be, limited government, protection of the unborn, and controlled legal immigration with no illegal immigration.
They believe in no personal responsibility, limiting of personal freedoms for the ‘greater good’, the abolition of the right to own a firearm, more government, abortion on demand, and open borders.
These two opposing viewpoints on these things cannot be reconciled. In our view, a compromise with evil is simply enabling evil.
Peggy Noonan, at her tut-tutting cocktail parties with Leftists, is completely clueless. She wonders “Why can’t we all get along” without realizing the people she is rubbing elbows thing the same thing, but see “getting along” as abdication by conservatives to their Leftist terms.
