Robert Faurisson, a former French academic who was convicted several times for claiming there was no systematic mass killings of Jews by Nazi Germany, has died aged 89 in his hometown of Vichy, central France.
British-born Faurisson was also a staunch defender of Marshal Philippe Petain, the Vichy French leader who collaborated with Nazi occupiers of the country during World War II.
A former professor of French literature at the University of Lyon, Faurisson maintained that the gas chambers in Auschwitz were the "biggest lie of the 20th century", saying deported Jews died instead of disease and malnutrition.
He also contested the authenticity of the diary of Anne Frank, the Dutch girl who managed to hide with her family from the Nazis for years before being caught and sent to concentration camps.
After France passed a law in 1990 making Holocaust denial a crime, Faurisson was repeatedly prosecuted and fined for his writings.
He was dismissed from his academic post in 1991.
In 2012, Faurisson received a prize from Iran's president at the time, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, for his "courage, resistance and fighting spirit" in contesting the Holocaust.
In 2008, he became close to French comedian and political activist Dieudonne, who has also been convicted for anti-Semitic insults.

Vichy...how utterly perfect for him.
You can prosecute someone for being a crank and a bore?
I am glad he is dead and the world will hear no more of his lies.
I have always called Holocaust deniers “the lowest form of humanity”, because that is what they area.
Having said that, having laws banning speech is a bad precedent. In Europe it started with these laws - and then it moved into “thought crimes” (”hate speech”) laws.
Free speech. And defeat lies with truth. That is the American way.
Adolf Hitler comes in a poor third in the Guinnes Book of Records mass murderer category. Could it be that there are “lower forms of humanity?”
Must be something in the water.
For the record, I oppose these kinds of laws.
Also for the record, I’d beat the crap out of him for saying such garbage, even if he was 89 years old at the time.
What a low life.
Probably not. Germans are probably fairly judged more harshly for two reasons. According to Rummell, The Germans were the worst in terms of the numbers killed in such a short period of time. They spent about 5 years to reach the numbers they did.
But another issue. Germany and the Germans who did it were not backwards Russians, or nearly primitive Chinese. They were educated, and had every benefit of judeo-christian culture and the enlightenment.
That is why Germany is more harshly judged. The world rightly expected better from a civilized nation.
Great photo. It’s what I thought of right away.
"First they came for the Holocaust Deniers....." I agree with your sentiment. Frankly, I want to know who the jerks are amongst us.
Blow it out your tailpipe you Nazi apologist. I said nothing of the sort. It’s absolutely a fact that Germany and German culture and the educational level of the average German in the 1930s and 40s utterly eclipsed what you could have found in most Russian people of that era, and most Chinese were in a dismal backwards state of education. I didn’t
say anything about race, jackass
So tell me, who else do you think besides the Russians and the Chinese are, as you put it, racially inferior?
I thought I made it clear that I did not agree with DesertRhinos comment that the Russians and Chinese were inferior. I did not call anyone unflattering names. I dont know how you determined that I was a Nazi apologist. I simply quoted a fact recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. Why my comment was removed I do not know.
Yeah, well, it partly depends (I guess) on whose “ox is gored”.
Hitler killed members of my family, destroyed the country of my birth and left it to the communists. For numbskulls like this douchebag to have the GALL to deny Hitler’s crimes (ALL of them - not just the Holocaust) rubs people like me - who had civilian relatives who were killed at the side of open pits by Wehrmacht death squads - the WRONG way.
Having said that, banning speech gives these skunks the chance to “play victim”. I’d rather defeat them in the open arena of ideas...
German and Japanese armies (as Prof Hansen points out in one of his youtube lectures) excelled at one thing above all other armies in world history - killing civilians.
And in terms of sheer numbers of civilians killed versus their own losses, the Japanese Army (thanks to their murder of tens of millions of Chinese) - was actually more “efficient” than Wehrmacht in this regard...
