The companies who knowingly hire illegal immigrants (and the illegal immigrants themselves) broke the law, and now they're crying as if they're the victims here.

There are plenty of American welders looking for good work. These companies just want to pay Mexican wages under the table rather than American wages aboveboard.

It must be comforting to trailer owners to know that people who don’t respect law (ilegals and those that hire thej) built the trailer?

...bought the black trailers to haul hay bales, topsoil, construction refuse, sand, oilfield equipment... Inside Load Trail's huge production building, welders turn raw steel into trailers, amid cacophonous clanging and showers of sparks. It's brutish labor — cut the heavy black metal, lug it into place, arc-weld it.

Oh, my! I'll bet NPR's faggoty little reporter felt quite a thrill going up his leg as he wrote those manly words... manly words, not words he often has occasion to write.

Not letting illegals weld big rig trailers together sounds like a plus for public safety.

Wow. Who’s going to pick the cotton if we free the slaves I wonder.

It’s a $10,000 fine for each illegal alien employee, isn’t it?

For that kind of money, he could set up his own welding school.

The illegals now have an opportunity to build their own trailer business -in Mexico.

As long as immigration reform is held hostage to amnesty there will be no immigration reform.

“You have to work hard,” he says in Spanish

17 years and he has not bothered to learn the language.

This is not immigration.
This is colonization.

"So the work is done by men like Ignacio Barrios, a sturdy, 36-year-old welder who came here illegally from Oaxaca, Mexico. He worked at Load Trail for 17 years before getting swept up in the ICE operation."

Was he collecting Welfare too?

Hiebert says they hire whoever walks in the door, and they pay decent wages — $20 to $25 an hour. Still, they’ve always had a hard time finding welders

I wish Project Veritas would check that out for us.

Let em move to Mexico, pay the cheaper wages there, deal with drug cartel violence, and pay high tariffs. And hopefully another company will set up in Texas and operate legally.

Ohmygosh….does this mean that businesses will have to follow the law to acquire foreign labor, but only when it’s necessary? Will they have to train workers who demand a living wage, rather than take workers away from countries that need these trained people to turn their own economies around? I’m sure if they’d try hard enough they’d find top-tier HS graduates who would choose job training for high-paying jobs instead of college debt.

.Gov will break down doors and seize assets if one had drugs. People aiding and abetting illegal aliens should get the same treatment. Companies are shielded way too much compared to the common citizen. Same for financial crimes committed by large financial institutions.

Karma. Hire illegals, deal with the consequences. Pay American wages for replacement employees. Else, go out of business and good riddance.

The author calls it “brutish labor.” These pathetic snowflakes would wet their panties if they walked through a steel mill or shipyard.

I hope ICE falls from a great height on the rest of the scofflaws employing illegal workers in this industry and town. Only then will the scales of competition be levelled for all and the employers can figure out how to meet demand legally. Choices could include paying better wages to attract welders from other endeavors, applying a technology solution that requires a capital expenditure, and/or increasing the price of the product to be able to do the two previous suggestions. Since I haven’t seen the actual product or process, I don’t know the best technology solution. I’d look real hard at how to engineer the process to use robotics and/or an automatic submerged arc crawler.

Welding would be a great job skill for training prison inmates in the last couple years of their sentences.

Might provide many with a chance at decent employment upon their release.
