The problem with Mass, is that there’s too many elderly people like my parents who think they’re still voting for the Democratic Party of FDR or Truman or JFK.

A lot of truth in that statement.

I am a right wing democrat who has no party now.
Another right wing democrat, Ronald Reagan, said it best with: "I didn't leave my party, they left me."

I left when they lynched Judge Bork, and have not voted for the socialists masquerading as a democrat since.
I have since, voted for the Republicans who will do less damage to the country. -Tom

The most conservative governor MA has had since Coolidge was Ed King, a democrat, who was far to the right of any GOP gov since.

Well Tall Deval is really just a Dem in sheeps clothing. His ability to be elected is predicated on two things liberals will allow. One he has and will support liberal legislation and endorse democrats. Also his election here allows democrats to say, “see we have an open mind, we voted for a republican.”

I think occasionally at play (more so in the past than today) is this:

Liberals are children. A liberal state is like a classroom full of children. At some level, they know they are kids: out of control, need an adult around to protect them.

So ... they sometimes elect a Republican to the executive because as much as they scream about the right, they know at some level that they are more connected to reality, more able to deal with things in life or the life of the State.

Of course in MA, the parent they elect is fake parent, a child calling themselves a parent.

And further, this phenomenon is not the same as it was 20 years ago.

But I believe it plays a part: Children want the executive branch, the parent, to not be as childlike as they are. The Kindergarteners want an adult in the room, because while in part kids want no adult around, they feel safer with one around.

In MA, little do they know, the parent is not a parent but a weasily child calling himself a parent.

Thirty years ago, Massachusetts was known as ‘Taxachusetts’. Now it has lower taxes than nearby states.

Why? The voters in MA put the brakes on. They made it clear that social liberalism is OK, but lay off the tax and spend. The politicians got the message.

Just to make sure, they keep electing a GOP governor.

But if there is one thing a Senator can’t do, it’s raise Massachusetts income and property tax. They’re safe ensconced in their office in Washington DC.

Hope this helps...

Dems=the Working Man; GOP=the Rich. It’s reflexive, and she’s too old to change.

This is precisely correct.

Remember, what became of the blue bloods and the brahmins were the abolitionists and hence the Republican party. Culturally, in MA, we are talking about moneyed Protestants, the kind we might consider country club today. MA sent people of this type to national office for years, until...

...the Irish and the Italians started gaining some political clout. In terms of polity, one of the dumbest things MA Republicans did was look down their collective nose at the Micks and the Giuseppes, because like you wrote, it soon became doctrine that the GOP was for rich blue bloods, and the Dems were for the noble working man. The Boston Traveler-American came to the front door, while the Boston Globe came to the back door (e.g., the servant's door).

Guess which side won out, demographically?

Now, add to it the tumult of the Vietnam Era: Left-leaning students here to exercise their deferments, and new fly-by-night colleges opening up to grant those deferments. The Era may be over, but the infrastructure remains, and many people chose to remain.

Also, I can't help but think there's a healthy dollop of snobbishness to the dynamic as well. Generally speaking, people in MA think they're intellectually superior to those from other parts of the country, especially the yokels from the old Confederacy. And look at which way those people lean, politically. Certainly, we're more evolved than them, yes?

Now mix in the Jesus stuff.

“They made it clear that social liberalism is OK, but lay off the tax and spend”

Exactly, they’re all in favor of big government as long as the bill is spread around nationally, that’s why they usually vote for a Republican governor.

If you take any form of welfare (including subsidized college loans or grants) you should lose the right to vote for 20 years.

Only citizens should be allowed to vote (that this now has to be asserted is beyond bizarre).

My wife feels that the 19th amendment should be repealed. I now pretty much agree but would grant exceptions to those who serve / served in the military.

IMO felons should not be allowed to vote.

IMO you should have to pass a difficult, old fashioned, civics test in order to vote. Don’t have the ability to pass? Too bad.

Course none of this will happen until after CWII.

Are they dancing the pas de deux from Swan Lake?

Trust me on this one. I do trust your opinion, I am a poll worker in Indiana and it amazes me how many people vote straight party knowing NOTHING about the individual candidates....pathetic.

1. Their GOP governor isn’t a real republican, and (2) they have to live more directly with the failures of a far-left governor than they do with a failure of a US Senator.

Oh,I do. Just avoid political discussions. I have 2 hardcore liberal daughters-——we NEVER discuss politics.

Not me, I have three sons each of which graduated from 3 different liberal universities....Indiana, Purdue and Notre Dame.....they are all ultra conservative partially because we DID have political discussions......mostly because they are all brilliant!!!!

My suburban middle-class town narrowly voted for Trump. And there were many others. But - of course - Hillary’s margins in Boston, Worcester, Brockton, Taunton, Fall River, etc swamp all that.

Trump won 2,600 counties in the country, Hillary won 500.....but she won 88 of the largest 100 counties....had she lost these, she would have lost by 11.5 million votes......thank you electoral college!!!!!!

IMO felons should not be allowed to vote.

wrong...once they have paid their penalty, they should be returned to society. A kid who shoplifts a T.V. at 18 is not the same person as the 55 year old business owner with 4 kids and a wife of 35 years who is worth 6.5 million dollars.....

Re: -—Baker’s an acceptable Mass. Republican.

No he's not. To many, he is merely the lesser of two evils.
