On the campaign trail, Rep. Beto O'Rourke has cast his mother, Melissa O'Rourke, as a lifelong Republican. The Texas Democrat's comments serve a purpose: his Republican mother is the exact sort of voter he'll need to win over in order to defeat GOP Sen. Ted Cruz in the red state and become the first Democrat to win a Senate seat there for the first time since 1988.
Tucked in a lengthy BuzzFeed News profile of O'Rourke in August, however, he himself acknowledged that his mother's politics were not as clear-cut as he lets on in his stump speech. "I introduce my mom sometimes, and I kid her a little bit, like 'my mom's a lifelong Republican, but we got her to vote for us in this race.' One day, she came up to me, and she said, 'You know, that's just not right: I would describe myself as an independent now, not a Republican. Definitely not a Democrat.' I don't know what the size of that universe is, but anecdotally we're meeting a lot of people who have described themselves that way," Beto O'Rourke said. A CNN KFile review found Melissa O'Rourke's voting history and political contributions support the more nuanced picture of her political identity.

Even if his mom really were a lifelong Republican (which she’s not), who cares if she is voting for her son? How can one possible compare this beta-male’s mom voting for him with Republicans in general?
Beto will have plenty of time to put in some serious skateboarding after he loses the election. Democrat candidates and incumbents have been telling some real tall tales this year and hiding their far left associations, but they’re getting caught red handed in their lies. I’m in my fifties and I’ve never seen the Democrats this frazzled and disorganized politically. For once they’re the “stupid party” and our side is actually playing it smart. I watched the debate on C-Span. Cruz drop kicked him across the room and then back again. Drudge is running a #FakeNews headline regarding Beto that would make the NY Times proud.

I’d think it was extremely odd if his mother didn’t campaign for him and say that she was voting for him.
That doesn’t mean anything at all. It also won’t make any differenct to anyone else. Who in the world is going to say “Oh, his mom is voting for him, I guess that means I should, too!”
(We don’t actually know what she’ll do when she’s in the voting booth anyway).
I call myself an Independent because I don’t support the Republican Party. Before President Trump was elected, they wouldn’t have spit on him if he had been on fire. Now they send me letters soliciting donations so that they can “support his agenda.” I’m donating exactly nothing to support “the party.” When I donate it’s to individual candidates. This predates President Trump, in fact; I got tired of “the party” trying to force candidates I didn’t like down my throat.
All that being said, the chances that I’ll vote for “Beto” are exactly nil.
