In the voting booth, weigh climate change as a pro-life issue
National Catholic Reporter ^ | October 14, 2018 | by Michael Wright

... As Catholic Christians, we are called to value life "in all its stages." This means we are also called to value that which sustains life, which includes things like health care, food and the environment, that is, creation. In fact, if we profess to be pro-life, we must necessarily be pro-creation.

The U.S. bishops, in their document "Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship," explain that the "culture of life begins with the preeminent obligation to protect innocent life from direct attack and extends to defending life whenever it is threatened or diminished."

Clearly, this applies to environmental degradation that directly affects health of individuals or populations and the threat that climate change poses to everyone, especially the most vulnerable - a major focus of Pope Francis' encyclical "Laudato Si', on Care for Our Common Home." In fact, the pope admonishes that harm to the environment caused by humans, including climate change, is tantamount to sin.

Therefore, one cannot ignore a candidate's disregard for the environment, even though that candidate may be opposed to grave sins (or even just one). If abortion, for example, were the only litmus test for a candidate, then anyone who runs for office would be qualified by simply stating opposition to it. Electing such an individual could hypothetically bring about other sins against humanity that the bishops admonish against, including lack of care for the poor and racist behavior.

On the theme of caring for God's creation, the bishops summarize: "We have a moral obligation to protect the planet. ... We should work for a world in which people respect and protect all of creation and seek to live simply in harmony with it for the sake of future generations."

The climate has always changed, bank on it.

Snuffing out the economy in a futile effort to “change the climate” will only result in greater unemployment, higher taxes and all the ills (Drug abuse, alcoholism, suicide, etc.) that come with it.

It is now one hundred percent conclusive that the author and the Bishops outright reject the very concept of lies of omission.

Maybe they should weigh the fact that repealing the industrial revolution means condemning the world to dire poverty, starvation and short lives.

Also, as a Christian of every denomination, you should pursue the truth.

What a dumb article.

Human caused global warming is what they really mean by climate change. There is no evidence for it.

They want a totally imaginary issue to be put on an equal par with 60 million dead babies killed in the womb.

Some one needs to fire those leaders and install new ones.

I would hope as a Catholic Christian they would value truth, and being sure what they are basing their truth on (God made or man made truth).

Actual care for one’s own health (personal responsibility included) vs health care regulations or laws.

Stewarding the environment or patch of land we may even own vs religion of save the planet and don’t allow ways of living that use water and maybe leave them a little dirty or such.

Even in Old testament times people “abused” the land mined for gold, and precious metals and jewels, had feces in the streets and houshold garbage etc around, burned big trash piles on outskits or town - Flood, No rain for years in some areas, - similar in New testament times, so what is this clown author even trying to say, for Catholics to not see it from biblical view?

God does not control the weather so we have to try to? God’s design/model of how the earth replenishes itself is breaking so we have to step in and try to fix it?

Submit to the present evil (abortion - Democrats) less a greater one befall you.

This means we are also called to value that which sustains life, which includes things like health care, food and the environment.

In other words, unless you are for Global Warming regulations and taxes, Obamacare and Food Stamps for all, you aren't a good Catholic.

Their priorities are greatly misplaced, and it's more proof that religion is so much easier when you dispense with all the 'God stuff.'

"Are these the same sort of church scientists who condemned Gallileo? They sure sound the same to me."

The church scientists (usually monks..not bishops) supported Galileo's science..as did the pope. What got Galileo into trouble was his politics. Not a good idea to call the pope "simplicio" (simpleton).

Let’s say global warming is real. I would rather deal with mother nature than give up my freedom and money to a bunch of liberal fascist. I would bet money that the liberal fascist would kill more people than mother nature.

The data in that chart ends 95 years before 2004: ftp://ftp.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/icecore/greenland/summit/gisp2/isotopes/gisp2_temp_accum_alley2000.txt so any 20th century warming is not shown. Also the CO2 levels were at 300 ppm in 1910. Today they are at 405 ppn.

What that graph does show is the fact the idea that Greenland is going to melt and flood the coastlines is nonsense.

Apparently, this is an obnoxious political strategy to get Catholics to vote for pro-abortion Democrats who believe in the other religion, Climate Change. Where is trust in our gracious God, who promises to “preserve man and beast,” of whom the Bible says, “ He upholds all things by the word of his power.”

Christians are warned about those who substitute the teachings of men for the teachings of God.(Matthew 15:9; Mark 7:7).
