Does the article say why? What are the causes? We don’t need more teaser clickbait from the Guardian...
Link to a response article and to a suicide hotline.
“I wrote about farmers’ suicides and the reaction has been overwhelming” [by citizens, not congress]
“In the US, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-8255. In the UK the Samaritans can be contacted on 116 123. In Australia, the crisis support service Lifeline is on 13 11 14. Other international suicide helplines can be found at www.befrienders.org.”
White privilege.
It’s The Guardian - Der Strumer for anti-Americans.
Debt appears to be a very significant factor.
I traveled to Puerto Rico in January a couple of years ago and a US farmers convention was sharing our hotel. they were the nicest guys/families and Im so sorry to hear this. They educated my daughters about the advances in the farming industry. I guess PR is where much of their research takes place.
Not a lot of future for many of them.
I am a farm kid. I became an engineer. The economies of scale are such that was the only choice I had. My father was a large scale pork producer with 8 to 10,000 head. Now, they don’t return you calls till you have at least 60,000 head under your control.
Trump will be blamed even though farmers have suffered for decades. Globalist want control of all of our wealth, including our land.
In the 1980s, Americas continuing family farm crisis began.
ince the 1980s farm crisis, Rosmann says experts have learned much more about how to support farmers. Confidential crisis communication systems by telephone or online are effective, but staff need to be versed in the reality and language of agriculture.
This is from Dec 6, 2017. Just curious as to why it’s being reposted today.
That would be the 1970's.
Bet there is a high correlation with debt.
Bet the statisticians might examine the number of easy money loans and which lenders are pushing the hardest. USDA might be leading this list.
How many of these folks are contract farmers for one of the pork or poultry firms?
OR
Hundreds of US farmers mysteriously ran over by their own tractors?
This is a tough one.
Title states “farmers” and part you posted states “including farmers, farm laborers, ranchers, fishers, and lumber harvesters”
deception in the title - likely thru the article too.
Plenty of ways people die can look like suicide but not really be.
Those working in the Agriculture industry also have higher rates of cancer and diseases such as ALS (Lou Gherrig’s disease.
I’ll wager that the increasing use and dependency upon (GMO crop related) pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers eventually have deleterious effects on those who have prolonged exposure.
Add the above physiological causality to the stress of financial risk and failure, and you have a recipe for psychological trauma - including sever depression, alcoholism and the abuse of prescription drugs - the combination of which could be a heavy factor in the increase of suicide rates
They are bored out of their gord and don’t have a head for if and really are not made of very good sfalk.
This is a good article but it got one glaring fact wrong.
I know the facts because we are a farming family and Jimmy Carter was a disaster for farmers despite being a “farmer” himself
The farming crisis didn’t start in the eighties, it started in the seventies under Jimmy Carter.(He was playing at farmer, didn’t earn his living off farming, big difference. Used framing as a tax “write off” )
Gas prices and rationing, price controls(A Nixon product), inflation(Ford)the embargo of the Russian wheat market and a few things else that made the seventies THEN the eighties Hell for farmers.
I suspect the writer starts this in the “eighties” because people link this to the reign of Reagan.
Otherwise. Good article
CDC’s data group is overly broad and captures too many non-farm operators to be of use.
Show me data drawn from farm owner-operator suicide investigations with autopsies not inconsistent death certificate reporting which varies at every level of transmission in 17 states.
Less farmers suicide than are murdered in Chicago
