Trump administration officials announced Saturday that immigrants who legally use public benefits like food assistance and Section 8 housing vouchers could be denied green cards under new rules aimed at keeping out people the administration deems a drain on the country. The move could force millions of poor immigrants who rely on public assistance for food and shelter to make a difficult choice between accepting financial help and seeking a green card to live and work legally in the United States.

Brilliant.
This restriction of not being a public burden goes back to Ellis Island, when every immigrant had to prove their ability to live here without taxpayer assistance. Either they could show your bank records, deeds to land they had purchased, or prove that a family member who had money would sponsor them. Those were the days when sensible Americans ran the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
I’d love to have adults running things again.
Will the sane measures ever stop!
Exactly. Every immigrant who came here whether the first on the Mayflower to those in the Mass Bay Colony to later on Ellis Island. They all worked. Until FDR and especially LBJ, then zero, we had none of these give them free phones to free housing etc. hand outs. There is more section 8 housing being built now then I have ever seen. Obama dumped 10K Somalis on us his the end of his last year. Cut off all hand outs. Even the damn VA has made it to where any Vet can get PTSD disability. They do not even have to get near a war.
Next step...deport them.
The NYT doesn't even consider the option that they should go back to their legal home a make a living there.
No illegal should ever be given financial help. Stabilize their medical condition if needed and send them home.
The VA tried to push my husband into having his hearing checked so he could apply for a service related disability - over 25 years after he was out!
It’s a big welfare scam any more.
Gosh, what a surprise. You really think that if you stop giving people free money, they might actually choose to work???
YES!
Most of the assistance to that class of invaders goes to those who do work but have only marginal incomes. I'd gladly trade them for "never worked and never will" homegrown hoodrats, babymamas and methheads. Send one of the above to the country of origin for each of the invaders we choose to keep (the "keepers", ones who work and don't break laws other than illegal presence). Better than an even trade!
Hmmm...my war was the Cuban Missile Crisis. How much can I get?
Grimly humorous how Ellis Island legal way worked.
Afrer a few rehearsed phony lines about fleeing to get asylum, accept and demand food, medical care, surgical carefree housing vouchers, schooling with free tutoring in their language,Obamaphone, dental care, legal aid and welfare money.
Why not go to US. Oh, and a voter ID card to vote Dem. under 2-3 foreign names with (Eijah Eliahu Mummad,Eli Muhammed, Eliahu E. Mohammod).
Whoever changed the original Ellis Island laws-—must not be dependent on public monies, must not carry infectious diseases, must be sponsored by relative or company where they will be employed-—should rot in hell. We should not be the world’s repository for the uneducated, unskilled, illiterate, criminal, and generally useless. We cannot afford that, it’s not a sustainable position.
George Papashvily wrote in "Only in America" that when he came over in the '20s, you had to prove you had X amount of dollars to get through the process.
There was one enterprising guy who was already here, who rented out a wad of bills to those who couldn't meet that criteria. He would greet the newcomer after he passed, got his wad back, and repeat the process.
BTW, the title came from an event when he toasted some newcomes at a boarding house for immigrants: "I see here a Turk sitting next to an Armenian - that can happen only in America."
Let me give you an example. An MI type who never left West Berlin in the 60’s claimed he fears the KGB killing him. You can look that up on BVA cases. The ratings are normally 30-50% and can be 70 or 100%.
I quit the VA in 2015 as they were very bad in Nashville. I heard Iraq and Afghan types almost all claim 70%-90% combined ratings. Many were in the sleep apnea program.
Cute Yorkie.
