We spy on all the Brit pols, they spy on all US pols and then we exchange the data. But neither country would deign to spy on their own citizens...we know this by how often and loudly they proclaim it. Just like we know the vast majority of FBI agents are true patriots who strive to follow the ideals of the USA because that’s how most of them introduce themselves.

It is illegal for the CIA to spy on an American on American soil, but the UK can spy on an American on American soil, then pass along intel to the CIA.
In return, the CIA spies on British Subjects on British soil, and passes along that intel to the Brits.
