The Pentagon ordered a company-sized element of U.S. Marines to conduct an aerial assault drill near a small U.S. base in southeastern Syria called the At Tanf garrison amid new concerns of Russian operations nearby.
Reports said that the Russian military has utilized a deconfliction hotline a number of times over the past week to warn the U.S. military of upcoming Russian and Syrian military operations aimed at destroying the last pocket of rebels from the Idlib region.

Bottom line, America is on the side of the Jihadi Rebels. So we view anyone who attacks the head choppers as a threat to us. It’s a shameful chapter of our history. And it’s shameful for Marines to be defending the philosophy that brought us 9/11.
Even more is the risk OT hitting the Russians and pissing them off.
Yeah, Im disappointed we have boots on the ground in Syria.
“Bottom line, America is on the side of the Jihadi Rebels.”
In the short, crips rebuke of President Trump, “wrong.”
We are there to support the kurds, I believe.
“What does bombing on Idlib in Syria mean for the Kurds?”
“President Assad plans to take the effective control of the entire country which includes Kurdish held region. As soon as he is done with Idlib, next stop is going to be northern Syria. The only leverage Kurds have is the time till the government forces are able to put the final nail in the coffin of the Syrian rebellion. Kurds are faced with a choice; going to war with the government forces or negotiating for a midway.”

Why are the Kurds our responsibility?
I’m in the crowd that thinks Russia simply doesn’t have the conventional combat power to take us on in that theater. Not even close. BUT, even though a lot of people here blow it off, they have the power with nuclear weapons to utterly annihilate our country. They will never do this voluntarily because it is certain suicide for them too. But, when we place them in an existential threat someday, it could actually happen. History is full of examples of what happens after a string of humiliations, insults and economic warfare is visited by the strong upon the week. Eventually even an earthworm will turn and fight.
And believe it or not, I think many of our neocons and very top level generals would love a conventional fight with Russia. They envision it as short and sharp and us teaching them a big lesson.
We are been lead by some true maniacs at this moment in time.
And all of this so that we can defend Sunni jihadis.
How dare Syrian government think they get to control all of Syria!
This entire war, is our war on Syria. We created the entire Syrian rebel movement. A small element of it got out of hand, and that’s what we claim we’re fighting. Despite all the high-minded rhetoric, this is simply our government attacking the Syrian government.
We repeatedly bombs Syrian government, and Russian allies when they’re moving. But Isis convoys are free to roam, Isis strongholds were never bombed except in the most dainty restrained manner.
The Kurds are our allies.
We look after friends
There is a new nation along the Euphrates and Kurds are a major part of that budding nation.
The current battles are about establishing a western boundry for that new nation
We should have nothing to do with the Syrian horror show.
The Russian military couldn’t stop an argument. Which is not to say their military isn’t without some capability, to be sure, but I think you’re right. Russia is in serious decline.
Is Syria worth starting WW3? Russia is in bad shape but this is no place to test them. The 2-300 dead mercenaries are still Russian.
Then the Kurds are fools if they think the US will go to the mat for them. We have interests in the Middle East, but they don’t necessarily involve a free Kurdistan. Incidentally, I think the Kurds are shrewd and will only push their position just so far because they realize this.
“....The 2-300 dead mercenaries are still Russian.”
and being members of a larger fraternity, their Buds have a diamond-cutting desire not so much to get mad but get even. Same as our guys in similar situation.
No. Syria shouldn’t be any concern of ours. We’ve had enough of a generation of young Americans killed, wounded and maimed for life fighting for and against the worthless Saracen bastards.Let Russia’s kids die for it. Russia has a long history of screwing itself up, between the czars and communism Russians are a hot mess.
Russians are still ready for war with underground shelters and food stockpiles. They still assume the entire system can collapse at any moment like it has many times in recent history.
Most of the population in the USA would be gone 1 month after highways stop delivering food and pure tapwater stops flowing.
They may lose a military confrontation but a surgical strike against civilian infrastructure would be far more devastating for us. Even without a single nuke fired
At least it’s not a war. Thank heavens that our Republican and Democrat politicians have kept us out of war for 73 years!
Unusual news site. Thanks for sharing.
I enjoy reading all perspectives.
[BUT, even though a lot of people here blow it off, they have the power with nuclear weapons to utterly annihilate our country. They will never do this voluntarily because it is certain suicide for them too.]
The Russians aren’t being restrained - they are hemmed in by America’s first-rate early warning systems and robust nuclear triad. Unlike Muslims, Russians aren’t driven by eschatological motivations. Muslims may hope to induce the Muslim Messiah to reveal himself by staging a cataclysmic nuclear attack. Russians want to conquer the world, not reduce Russia to smoking radioactive ruin within the tiny rump state it was under Mongol vassalage.
