JUIZ DE FORA, Brazil (Reuters) - The leading candidate in Brazil’s presidential election is in serious but stable condition after being stabbed by an assailant at a campaign rally on Thursday, doctors said, pushing an already chaotic campaign into further disarray.

-snip- The Federal Police said in a statement that it had officers escorting Bolsonaro at the time of the knife attack and the “aggressor” was caught in the act. It said the circumstances were being investigated.

Local police in Juiz de Fora confirmed to Reuters that the suspect, Adelio Bispo de Oliveira, 40, was in custody and that he appeared to be mentally disturbed.

The perp is a socialist. Of course he's mentally disturbed. Just being a socialist puts him in that category.

Is the candidate really “far right”?

In the MSM, a candidate can be labeled “far-right” but you never see a “far-left” candidate identified.

Shades of Luis Donaldo Colosio in 1994.

Far Right? Doesn’t that just mean he believes in freedom?

Far Right? Doesn’t that just mean he believes in freedom?

He is campaigning on reforming Brazil's draconian gun control laws. He wants Brazilian citizen s to be able to defend themselves from criminal attack.

He’s spoken favorably of the military junta that ruled in the 80s, and has called for tougher policing tactics and limitations on civil liberties to fight crime.

This said, I don’t think the claims that he is “fascist” or “far right” are accurate. But he is certainly populist, with the downsides that come with that approach. He’s closer to Victor Orban (Hungary) or Matteo Salvini (Italy) than Trump in his populism. The Brazilian left and the political establishment in general have failed, and his rise is a result of that failure.

It does not seem that the draconian gun control laws have slowed down the murder rate. Just like in Chicago.

To some folks, just left of center is “far-right”.

The murder rate climbed after their strict gun laws were enacted. Link to article about Brazilian gun law and potential reforms.

To some folks, just left of center is “far-right”

that is certainly true in many countries where Socialism is considered the middle ground between fascist groups like Communism and Nazism

They’re so biased, they no longer even try to hide it.

A more honest headline would have been “LEADING candidate in serious condition...”

Yes, and I'm sure he "acted alone". The candidate was injured, but is leading in the polls. This probably won't have a negative impact on those numbers. Thanks Boomer.
