The power structure in North Korea has too much to lose if North Korea is transformed. Kim does not have firm control and cannot overcome entrenched opposition.
China is behind this. They have the most to lose.
The premise is journomalpractice. The assumption is that world affairs can be accomplished within an established timeline.
That thought alone means the rest ot the article is just garbage

Pretty useless posting anything from wsj (I know you’re not the OP)
The stalemate started about 65 years ago..
Kim has PLENTY of control.
HE is the problem.
And hes jacking us around, as did dad and grandad.
As predicted.
We don’t need a deal. Trump has to make so that CHINA needs a deal.
Ah yes. But I am :-)
Obama and Clinton asserted the same thing but they were given no such pass here on FR. And rightly so. They, too, were incredibly naive and over optimistic about DPRK coming clean. We dont have to all wait around to the moment POTUS changes his mind and declares the truth about Little Rocket Man screwing us (and him) which he had been doing beautifully early this year, for us to independently sound off on the fact the Kim and crew are once again giving us a line of shit as always, backed up by PRC and Russia, on his own merit and by his own hand.
That is true. However, presently, in the meantime, we are not just waiting around. There are biting sanctions in place.
If Kim doesn’t come around the question becomes shall we kill him in a war or let him wither on a sanctioned vine? I think the Presidents course is to keep a close eye on the withering progress before going to war.
The present course is different than before and perhaps most important, there is no money carrot
No one has ever found cooperation in North Korea, unless his name was ‘Kim.’
“Kim does not have firm control and cannot overcome entrenched opposition.”
He has 1/2 the total power.
The military has the other half.
That’s the real stalemate.

there are several ways to get around the WSJ paywall; not all work all the time though:
1. noscript extension with firefox, where ones disallows scripts from WSJ ... that one works the best most of the time
2.temporarily switching browsers
3. google searching the headline and then clicking the link
4. combining more than one above
but bypassing the WSJ takes determination and knowledge that most probably don’t have, so I definitely see where you’re coming from ...
“...The power structure in North Korea has too much to lose if North Korea is transformed. Kim does not have firm control and cannot overcome entrenched opposition...”
Exactly. It is similar to trying to get Islamic mullahs to become democratic and return some power to the INDIVIDUAL. Will not happen without a complete victory over oppressive and totalitarian rule. Never has, and never will.
They’re waiting for are midterms people. This should be obvious.
Give Kim a proposal for peace, and put the ball into his court.

Last week Trump said things were fine. Seems you always find articles that breathlessly explain to us that Trump is wrong, being played, etc.
Last week the same WSJ explained to us that there was no genocide against white farmers in SA too. Your source paper isn’t reliable, and is anti Trump.
[Theyre waiting for are midterms people. This should be obvious.]
Correct
