Paramus, N.J. (CBS) New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill into law Saturday that requires new school buses to have lap and shoulder seat belts.
The legislation is in response to a deadly school bus crash in Mount Olive, Morris County.
The bus was headed to a field trip back in May when it collided with a dump truck.

School Children both in buses and class will not be safe in New Jersey with so called 'leadership' like this.
Great. As though getting stuck behind a school bus wasn’t already hell. Now you have to wait at every kid’s house for him to figure out a seatbelt.
The idiocy of the bus driver is why there were fatalities. He missed the exit for a field trip and cut across all lanes on the interstate in an asinine attempt to access an emergency vehicle only cross lane between the east and west bound sections of the interstate. He cut off a dump truck carrying a full load that rear ended the bus separating the chassis from the frame.
It’s amazing that more people weren’t killed. The highway camera footage of the accident is quite damning.
Typical leftist answer that will have little impact and fleece taxpayers.
Just for the record, I have only been in one school bus crash: School bus 1, station wagon 0. I had to sit on that stupid bus for over an hour when it was a stinking block and a half from my house.
If I was a school bus driver I’d want each kid locked in a rubber cell.
The only thing I can figure is that everyone involved has agreed that even a hint of seat belts improving safety would result in a huge retrofit cost that the state and local governments don’t want.
Bingo.

Well, old buses are apparently not being retrofitted under this law; it’s for new buses. Of course, quality of bus drivers will see no improvement until the next big crash where seat belts won’t matter, as it appears it would not have here.
The reason most don't have seat belts is because statistically it's more likely that a student will assault and injure another student with the seat belt buckle than that the belt itself will prevent a student's injury.
In it sez you must not make illegal u turns with children on board, duh
What about making U turns with illegal children on board? That maneuver is probably protected.
Paramus superintendent knew in 2017 of bus driver's suspension record, documents show
Read the docs at the link. This is infuriating.
yea, he covering up the real truth — the fact that the morons of the Paramus Board of Education, hired a bus driver with a sorded past. As past so severe that he should never have been driving at all. He had a number of license suspensions BEFORE he was hired, he was in his 70’s and well beyond his prime.
Obviously, hew must have been a political appointee for someone so despicalbe to be hired.
And, the bus drive was just so dumb, so careless to cross, laterally, horizontally a major interstate with a slow-moving bus, on an highway were trucks drive 80 mph.
that’s the reason why the 2 people were killed.
not because of seatbelts, this is just democrat political pandering by a democrat governor, for a democrat town and school system and for a democrat driver..
