Israeli Jews Are Losing Patience with the Diaspora
American Thinker ^ | 08/06/2018 | Harold Goldmeier

Posted on 08/06/2018 8:28:24 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

My wife kicks my leg under the dinner table whenever guests rail against anti-Netanyahu and Israel critics. The U.N. and college students are also favorite targets. "Save your contrarian opinions for your articles, not the dinner table," she reproaches me. I'm pretty black and blue, as you might imagine.

This abridged dinner talk reflects the mounting impatience Israel advocates have because of a siege mentality set in among Israelis and Anglo-olim (immigrants). It incubates from the politics of fear, and they are just not taking it any longer. I have noticed a palpable shift in attitude in the six years since we made aliyah. For instance, staunch Israel advocate Alan Dershowitz threatens to no longer attend Israel public forums, because audiences, particularly American attendees, boo and shout down critics of Israel.

Israelis give shrinking quarter to the likes of Natalie Portman, Peter Beinart, and Jeremy Ben-Ami. Michael Chabon is now totally out of the picture. One of Israel's most famous Anglo op-ed writers goes so far as to question the loyalty of Israel's military leaders and former elected officials who criticize the government.

Israelis scoff when they hear claims from abroad that we love Israel but do "not want to appear as endorsing Benjamin Netanyahu." Israel is becoming an apartheid state. Israel disproportionately punishes Arabs (implying that Israel is militarily strong and Arabs are Keystone Cops). In Israel, this is code for the country and Jewish people being creatio ex nihilo, led by craven schemers with perfidious policies. Israelis are flummoxed when they hear Diaspora critics speak vengefully about Israel's formidable response to terrorists dressed in t-shorts and flip-flops. Israelis believe that Diaspora Jews just don't get it, but Israelis are caring less.

Anglo-olim, especially Shabbat-observant vatikiim (antiques or seniors), trend right of center

Something that has always confused me.

The Jews from Israel that I meet are pretty solid people. Their diaspora cousins are often liberal as the day is long.

The latter are often very anti Israel too.

This writer talks around the subject while never making a point.

Written as an insider familiar with Jewish terminology. For an outsider, it is a confusing read.

Basically, if I get the story right, Jews loyal to Israel and its government are getting tired of liberal critics.

Do you also worry about liberal Catholics like Nancy Pelosi, or is your consternation limited to liberal Jews?

Seems a bit odd to worry about .2% of the worlds population.

All the writer is saying is, people with whom he agrees are no longer mainstream or being listened to, and it bothers him, not because he likes open debate, but because he agrees with the lying libs. He's just not being honest about it. Thanks SeekAndFind.

Article was about Jews in Israel and in the Diaspora.

As to the Catholics... that is the reason my wife is no longer Catholic.

What the Catholic church states on paper and historically is the opposite of its practice. In practice, the Catholic Church in the US is opposed to anything that is viewed as conservative, because they hold a grudge from over a hundred years ago. So that means that while they say they are pro life (and to be fair, a great many ARE pro life), many Catholic politicians and people are very pro infanticide. Why? Because the hate Republican No Nothings are pro life, and the blessed part of Kennedy is not.

Back in the “bad old days” of the FR religion forum, I would fight that fight all the time. About half the Catholic posters would blast me for being anitCatholic, and therefor damned to hell. The others would email me and say they agree, but were afraid to speak out because their priest/bishop/etc would blast them.

It got so bad that a number of use were told to STFU by the mods, and that pretty much ended the FR religion forum as the way it was.

The article posted just made me comment because I know of a family where half went to Israel, and half stayed. I get along with and have much more in common with the ones from Israel than the ones that stayed (they visit occasionally and love to go to the gun range). Their American Cousins are to the left of Pelosi, and are very embarrassed that they have family in Israel.

Works for me.

More essentially, conservative Jews (in both Israel and abroad) are getting fed up with the suicidal politics of leftist Jews (in both Israel and abroad).

I think he is saying that Jews loyal to Israel and its government are getting tired of CONSERVATIVE critics.

My reading is that this guy is fed up with all the Diaspora and immigrant (to Israel) Jews who are speaking out in ways with which he disapproves.

His wife has to kick him in the leg to keep him from speaking up against Anglo-olim conservative guests.

One, he thinks he is smarter than anyone else at the table, which is why he delivers so much double-talk, and that table includes any and all Anglo-olim Jews who happen to disagree with him, and aren't afraid to tell him so.

Two, he utters this statement: Israel is becoming an apartheid state.

This Leftist Israeli is merely falling back on the same monstrous scurrility that American Leftists cough up anytime they are caught out in lies, smears, dodges, ad hominem attacks: They claim that the other side is dividing and destroying the country with its facts, evidence, and hard truths.

This man has fear and appeasement written all over him.

Israeli Jews and American Jews are very different.
In America, they are surrounded by other uber-liberals who use their money and influence and thus they are liked and respected.

In Israel, they are surrounded by people who want them to be destroyed as they continue to build and defend a country which was a useless junk pile in ‘30s and is now a very powerful country.

The common denominator is both Jews love their families, are very hard working (other than Hollywood), want the best for their families , are pro-education and thus their children frequently go on to be educated professionals.

Thank you! I had no idea what he was saying. Some sentences were in quotes, others were not, creating total confusion in my mind.

If anyone can translate, please do. Thanks.
