Mike Huckabee lashes out at CNN reporter over heated exchange with his daughter

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) on Friday lashed out at CNN reporter Jim Acosta after he had a tense exchange with Huckabee's daughter, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, the day before.

Huckabee targeted Acosta, who has been at the center of a firestorm over President Trump and the press, in a series of tweets after he and Sanders engaged in a heated back-and-forth over the president’s repeated attacks on the press during Thursday's White House press briefing.

The former governor referred to the reporter as a “BUG” in one tweet and his daughter as “the WINDSHIELD” and in another tweet shortly after the briefing said, “Jim Acosta suffers severe nose bleed from the elevation of his high horse. Taken to safe space and provided with Play Dough, a popsicle, pictures of a pony to color and a puppy.”

TWEETS:

"I know I'm as objective about @PressSec as @NYTimes new hateful, racist hire Sarah Jeong is about white people, but I still think @PressSec is the WINDSHIELD and little Jim Acosta is the BUG."

"Breaking wind from CNN! Jim Acosta suffers severe nose bleed from the elevation of his high horse. Taken to safe space and provided with Play Dough, a popsicle, pictures of a pony to color and a puppy."

During Thursday's briefing, Acosta repeatedly pressed Sanders to say she does not believe President Trump's claims that the press is the "enemy of the people."

"For the sake of this room, the people that are in this room, this democracy, this country ... the president of the United States should not refer to us as the enemy of the people," Acosta said during the briefing. "His own daughter acknowledges that, and all I’m asking you to do, Sarah, is to acknowledge that right now and right here."

Sanders responded to Acosta by saying she shares the reporter's passion but refused to walk back Trump's charged rhetoric.

"I’ve addressed this question, I’ve addressed my personal feelings. I’m here to speak on behalf of the president. He’s made his comments clear," Sanders said.

Dear Miss Mannerly,

I hold a very important career position – frankly, I believe the most important position in the world – yet I am having trouble getting the people I work around to show me the deference I expect. Worse, my workplace is in the public eye, which makes these sleights all the more embarrassing and unacceptable.

My chief problem is the woman who runs the daily meetings. She always tries to keep the focus on what her boss thinks is important that day, instead of things I know to be more important, such as what a childish egomaniac her boss is. Some of my colleagues (not all, thankfully) let her attempts to speak and answer questions on the topic at hand go unchallenged. When the others refuse to insist that she change the subject to what she should be addressing, it always falls to me to “cut to the chase” and start shouting questions on the unrelated topic and telling her how to do her job. Often, she and the others ignore me, or ruder yet, try to talk over me, which forces me to shout even louder and repeat the same question multiple times. Incredibly, my attempts to help her in this way seem to make her even less patient and more dismissive of me.

Despite my best efforts to refocus the meetings in the correct direction, and to be a shining example of our sacred First Amendment rights, I receive no gratitude. Instead, I have actually been the target of criticism, even name-calling (“unprofessional,”“crybaby,” “jerk,” etc.) Some have actually accused me of being the one who has lowered the tone of the meetings, can you imagine? Because these meetings are widely seen by the public, I have been subjected to outrageous insults from the rabble, such as cruel insinuations that I and the organization I represent “suck.” There has even been talk of barring me from future meetings.

My question: how can I make these deplorable people I have to work around every day show me the level of respect that I deserve?

Outraged in DC

Response:

Dear Gentle Reader:

It is Miss Mannerly’s impression that they already do.

Go back and listen to this blowhard trying to abuse Sarah. He calls her, “sir”. He is a sexist and a gender bully.

Governor Huckabee needs to butt out. Sarah is a grown woman, and she’s more than capable of taking care of herself. He and Mrs. Huckabee raised her well. He undermines her when responds to the attacks on her like this.

I disagree. I don’t think he undermines her by sticking up for her. And he’s definitely right about the Bug on the Windshield metaphor. I didn’t hear anyone else in America use that metaphor. I’m very glad someone did. Who cares if it was her own father? I don’t.

Bug.
Windshield.

Worth repeating.

I would agree with you if the governor made it sound like Sarah was a victim, but he does not! He is merely validating what you said about her - that she's more than capable of taking care of herself.

Calm down, Mike. Everybody know Sarah is a lovely, highly intelligent, very decent, highly moral, wonderful person whom anyone would love to have for a son or daughter and that Acosta isn’t.
