Yes, we have two groups with different visions of America. However, everyone is too comfortable so the second Civil War is not possible at this point of time.

The Campus Higher education surely helped split the country in two.

The old liberal arts education is dead, wrecked by multicultural claptrap and diversity and the tie of gender and race studies. If that rot extends into engineering and the basic sciences, the university is dead as a whole.

What university just covered over Kipling’s If with a poem by... Maya Angelou?

Reforming the university would help too, mostly by abolishing tenure, requiring an exit competence exam for the BA degree (a sort of reverse, back-end SAT or ACT exam), and ending government-subsidized student loans that promote campus fiscal irresponsibility and a curriculum that ensures future unemployment for too many students.

I totally agree. Even liberal arts schools used to teach reading, writing, and logic.

We should really piss off the left and reinstate the draft. And this time with no deferments.

Just for the fun of it.

They would make useless soldiers. But at they could handle a weapon.

Why would there be a war? Is there a war in Europe? They are being systematically destroyed just as we are. The same methods apply in both cases. The Europeans haven’t risen up to do anything. Neither will we.

We still don’t even have a political party to represent us in what’s left of an old shell game. We have no “resistance” movement. No national strategy to secure our union, no militia, no armed patriotic committees, hell 9 out of 10 people on this website would prefer to be flogged in public before involving themselves in any organization that the media would immediately slander as “anti-Semitic”.

It is very simple why there will be NO CIVIL WAR, because we won’t fight one! They will foul our nest with millions of the worlds useless eaters and we will drown in it! We will be swallowed up and buried by a sea of third world illiterates and we will do it surrounded by the worlds most powerful military ever devised! One that we paid for with our own labor for over a century.

No, there will be no Civil War. Just a daily reading of the horrible headlines until the light flickers out.

I like his formulations and sentence construction, but he is rambling everywhere here, citing this and that, like a laundry list of pet grievances.

I think he takes excerpts from other essays and roughly creates an amalgam — even repeating himself at times with, for example, the line “sinners and saints.”

This is like a composite of “the best of” lines from other essays. And though they contribute to the general malaise there is no overarching theme, no central issue like slavery was in the first Civil War.

Maybe there is no overarching theme and it is a cultural war on many fronts. I think — if I had to guess — the overarching theme is the decline or demise of the West or America. That seems sufficiently broad. The decline of the West by the West — the inner rot growing strong enough to change and destroy America.

The Origins of Our Second Civil War

1. Universal suffrage (and that includes men too)

2. Federal reserve

3. Income taxes

Nearly all US pathologies can be traced to these.

VDH always makes a lot of great points, but I don’t think divisions of today are geographic enough to trigger a war between the states.

Also, I think the divisions of today originate from the party whose entire political strategy is based on creating divisions - namely, the Democrat party.

Sure, there are plenty of RINO’s to blame as well, but they are mostly just cowards who succumb to Democrat blackmail: “Conform or be called a racist”.

The Democrat party has the almost unbeatable political strategy of “vote for me and I’ll give you other people’s money”. They also have entirely captured the media, Hollywood and academia which serve as their propaganda ministry.

So successful has been the Democrat Propaganda ministry, that hardly any truth is spoken publicly about anything, and college graduates have been deprived of their intellectual ability to question the politically correct doctrine.

And yet, the pundits, professors and celebrities who deliver the untruths are still afforded the same respect, credibility and authority as if they were speaking the truth!

I think the only hope for the Republic is to somehow knock the Left of its media perch - they have a virtual monopoly over all communication and education, they are pathological liars - and for the better part of a century, they have been whittling away at the foundations.

The Origins of Our Second Civil War

Partner, I really think that the Communist/Socialists in both parties want this to happen.

Of course, they will be introduced to the joys of busting rocks in jail or hell from now till eternity.

Freepers all across the fruited plain have great comments to this thread.

“We are now nearing a point comparable to 1860, and perhaps past 1968.”

The poorest weren’t the most likely to be obese in 1860, weren’t the most entertained poor people ever, and weren’t used to air conditioning and sedentary lifestyles. It’s hard for me to imagine them choosing the hardship that comes with sustained civil unrest while these conditions persist.

“If in 1970 a nerd slandered one on the sidewalk and talked trash, he might not do it twice; in 2018, he did it electronically, boldly, and with impunity behind an array of masked social-media identities.”

Seems to me the 2018 nerd is sitting at home being entertained, while said nerd didn’t have that option in 1970. I wonder if the general lowering of the violent crime rate isn’t partly do to internet/video games.

I appreciate the sentiment, but “Civil War” talk is a tad overheated. Things aren’t even as bad as they were in the 1990s, let alone the 1960s and 1970s. We aren’t even in the same ballpark as the 1850s.

If anything like the Rodney King riots, the Watts riots, the 1968 DNC, or Kent State happened today, you’d think it was the apocalypse, let alone something like Bleeding Kansas. No one in Congress been beaten half to death with a cane in the Capitol lately.

I’m as concerned about the rise of the openly-socialist left as the next guy, but we’ve been through worse. As bad as Obama was, he was nothing compared to Wilson or FDR.

I’ve been known to indulge in overheated rhetoric about the state of our politics, but I think it just empowers the left. I prefer to subject them to the ridicule they deserve, and keep winning in the ballot box as we have been.

One cultural artifact was that as our techies and financiers became rich, as did those who engaged in electric paper across time and space (lawyers, academics, insurers, investors, bankers, bureaucratic managers), the value of muscularity and the trades was deprecated. That was a strange development. After all, prestige cars, kitchen upgrades, gentrified home remodels, and niche food were never more in demand by the new elite. But who exactly laid the tile, put the engine inside the cars, grew the arugula, or put slate on the new hip roof?

I'm going to say autonomous Lesbian communes ...
