Trump's Iran Strategy: Regime Change on the Cheap
New York Magazine ^ | Monday, July 30, 2018 | Jonah Shepp

Iran has recently faced the largest wave of popular protest since the Green Movement of 2009, mainly focused on economic stagnation but also bleeding into more political issues of foreign policy, personal freedoms, and human rights. The rising wave of discontent is pushing the government to make some concessions. Just yesterday, the regime's security council approved the release of opposition figures Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, leaders of the 2009 protest movement, from house arrest after seven years.

This move illustrates the regime's unease with the rising pressure from the streets, but also shows that it has some tools available to alleviate that pressure. The latest protest movement, unlike the Green Movement, is divided in its agendas and lacks both organized leadership and an appetite for violent confrontation -- both of which the regime has in spades.

Nonetheless, the Trump administration seems to view these protests as the best avenue for regime change in Tehran without a U.S. military intervention.

Naturally, Shepp the Shill spins recent events to portray President Trump as the villain, and enemy dictatorship Iran as the victim. I wonder what Shepp's FR nick is?

“Regime change on the cheap”
The MSM preferred Obama’s “appeasement on the exorbitant”.

Every conclusion drawn in the article is wrong. No surprise. And, of course, no mention of Obama throwing the 2009 uprisers under the bus and the effect that had on future events.

Interesting article, if only to see a leftist article that actually discusses the geopolitical issues at play, without just calling Trump the insane racist super Hitler getting rich off war or such. I disagree with most of his points, but at least he made points.

interesting also in his implication that the fact that we are looking out primarily for our own interests and those of our allies is some dirty secret. It’s actually what a presidential administration is supposed to do! The positive effects on the non-nut portion of the Iranian people is wonderful, but not really our motivation. Duh.

He beat Hillary on the cheap. Do not attack the country. Support them in other ways. They’ll need it. Condition future aid on a turn over of the hostage takers in 79’.

Obama screwed the Iranian people in 2009 to help his buddies in Tehran

Ultimately, Obama’s support of the Iranian Radical Muslim Theocracy is going to be its downfall - extending Obama’s reverse Midas touch to include years after he left office.

The Ayatollahs used the American sanctions and freezing of assets s as an excuse for the economic disaster that Iran become. Obama destroyed the sanctions against Iran and released the assets that have been frozen since 1980

Despite Obama’s lifeline to the Ayatollahs, the Iranian economy has gotten worse, not better and the Ayatollahs have run out excuses

Obama’s reverse Midas touch

Good point, kinda like when he went to the UK to use his influence to lecture the people against Brexit and the polls reversed immediately and they passed it.

Amazing article. The author believes that regime change in Iran is Trump’s “dark purpose.”

I have trouble understanding how overthrowing a leading sponsor of terrorism is “dark.”
