The bigger the gun, the deadlier it is. Or, rather, the bullet.
The Washington Posts Christopher Ingraham on Friday highlighted a study published in the journal JAMA Network Open that found larger-caliber firearms are much likelier to kill a shooting victim than smaller-caliber ones. Caliber measures the internal diameter of the barrel of the gun, or how wide the bullet is.
Analyzing data on hundreds of shootings in Boston between 2010 and 2014, researchers Anthony Braga of Northeastern University and Philip Cook of Duke University discovered that on a bullet-by-bullet basis, shootings with larger-caliber guns were deadlier than smaller-caliber handguns, but theyre not more accurate. Shootings with a medium-caliber weapon were 2.3 times likelier to result in death than with a small-caliber gun; large-caliber guns increased the odds of death by 4.5 times compared to small-caliber guns.
The implication, Braga and Cook wrote, is that replacing medium- and large-caliber guns with small-caliber guns would have resulted in a 39.5 percent reduction in gun deaths.

My rules of a gunfight are a bit different.
I prepare by packing a handgun that fits me, that I’m very well practiced with and can use well.
My rules.
SHOOT FIRST
SHOOT MOST
SHOOT BEST
LIVE TO WALK AWAY
Then go home and practice some more.
“The implication, Braga and Cook wrote, is that replacing medium- and large-caliber guns with small-caliber guns would have resulted in a 39.5 percent reduction in gun deaths.”
This ‘implication’ will be taken as gospel by the lefturds and gun-grabbers of all stripes. But, in fact, it completely ignores the likelihood that perps set on killing by firearm will do so, with whatever is readily available.
With big scawy .45s.

Nope. They haven’t discovered physics. Look at the chart: 7.62mm is “large”, 10mm is “medium”. Lol
Sorry, 9mm is medium... Still.
The only reason you shoot someone is to make them stop what they are doing this instant.
The better a round is at doing that, the more likely it is to kill the person you want to stop what they are doing this instant.
Caliber is a real word, with a real meaning.
Now if the bozos at Vox can just come up with a way to reduce the numbers of deaths from automobiles, knives and abortions we’ll be good. California just banned straws to reduce the number of deaths from sucking on straws but the numbers of how many deaths from sucking on straws have been actually prevented aren’t in yet.
They’re misusing the word, agreed.
No .223/5.56 on the chart either. AR15s are now accepted. Cool!
heh heh heh, but the evil 7.62x39 made the list
“Restrict” means “ban”, and once again the people with the least firearms knowledge are the first in line to try to “regulate” them.
“They talk about “replacing” large caliber weapons with small ones via legislation. How would that work, exactly?”
What legislation? President Ocasio-Cortez would simply sign an EO ordering all weapons larger than .22 cal to be turned in within thirty days or owners would face arrest. Secretary of the Interior David Hogg would order the formation of a Civilian Confiscation Corps (CCC) made up of high school age youth to go door to door seizing those weapons not voluntarily turned in.
Tent city prisons to be set up for the recalcitrant.
Simple, huh?
;^)
And this from the JAMA? You’d think they would at least use their words correctly...
So by this logic a .25auto is more deadly that a .22-250?
Hydrostatic shock, plus energy, plus fragmentation kinda rocks. Thats the way to drop an elephant. Journalists are so st00pid. The bigger, the better which trying to drop the target.
“n fairness, they describe centerfire rifle cartridges as “large caliber” regardless of their diameter because of the energies involved, just as they classify .38 special as “medium” and .357 magnum as “large”, despite them shooting identical bullets.”
But they don’t even show the .223, just the AK-47 round. And the best advice is carry the gun you’re comfortable with. My wife has a .32 Autp Beretta Tomcat because she has arthritis and has difficulty with the slides on her larger handguns now. It may be “small caliber,” but with good shot placement it’s an effective weapon.
Remember the good old days of pre-1968 when the libs were screaming about all those murders done with “foreign made” .22LR Saturday Night Specials?
More people were murdered with the .22 than any other cartridge.
The way to reduce gun deaths is to eliminate the exposure to toxic liberalism.
There were no shootings from a .223 in their data, so they didn't include it.
