The Yankees have agreed to a deal to acquire O's closer Zach Britton, pending physicals, according to MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi.
Right-handers Dillon Tate, who is the Yankees' No. 9-ranked prospect, and Cody Carroll, who's ranked No. 15, and Triple-A left-hander Josh Rogers are in the package for Britton, according to sources.
The Orioles were still reviewing medical records, a source told MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli, so it's unlikely a deal will be announced on Tuesday night. The Yankees will pick up the remainder of Britton's salary, which is about $5 million for the rest of 2018, and no international pool money was involved in the deal, a source tells MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
The Yankees acquired Tate -- a fourth overall selection by the Rangers in 2015 -- as part of the package that sent Carlos Beltran to Texas during the summer of 2016. Tate was scratched from his start Tuesday night for Double-A Trenton.
Britton, who returned from an Achilles injury earlier this season, has a 3.45 ERA over 16 appearances (15 2/3 innings) for Baltimore. Last season, he had a 2.89 ERA over 38 appearances prior to the injury. He had a historic 2016 campaign, in which he posted a 0.54 ERA with 47 saves. He is due to be a free agent after this season.
The Yankees entered play Tuesday with the Majors' best bullpen in terms of ERA (2.75) and opponents' batting average (.199). Despite having the Majors' best offense and third-best record, New York entered the day six games back of Boston in the American League East.
Adding Britton to a relief corps that already includes closer Aroldis Chapman, as well as late-inning stalwarts Dellin Betances and David Robertson, could make New York's bullpen the best in baseball as the club seeks its first AL East title since 2012.
Tate, 24, has a 3.38 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP in 15 starts for Double-A Trenton this season. In 13 starts between Class A Advanced Tampa (nine starts) and Trenton (four) last season, the right-hander posted a 2.81 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP.
What a bullpen. Jeez.
Among what will be the Yankees’ top 6 relievers — Chapman, Betances, Robertson, Holder, Green, and Britton — the highest ERA is 3.05.
Butt wut about gay pride night!!?
u aren’t invited this year
The Os fire sale continues. They don’t need Britton - he’s a closer and they rarely get to the late innings with a lead. They do need a lot of other players so move him for prospects. And the Yankees get a good complement to Chapman.
The deal has now been officially announced.
I bet Brad Brach and Adam Jones are out of there too.
The reason he will always be on my fantasy team:
This sounds like a corny movie. About 2010, he was trying to learn a slider. He uncorked a crazy pitch. The catcher said, “I don’t know what you just did. But, can you do it again?” And he started repeating it. People started crowding around in awe. Eventually, some old-timer said, “I’ve seen that pitch one other time. That’s the pitch that put Steve Carlton in Cooperstown.”
I used to be a huge Yankees fan and admit I don’t follow much except to read a few scores and look at stats. But “it seems” the Yanks have massive heavy firepower (home runs/RBIs) but not much in the way of “get on base” guys-—virtually no one with an average of .300. Is this correct?
It also seems they need one more really strong starter. I look at the recent Tampa Bay games and the only one they won was the one where they kept the runs under 7 for the opponent.
I dont know about that Im only looking at Ws and Ls. The line-up is loaded - Judge, Stanton, Gregorious is having a career year, Torres has been fantastic. Boston has been playing eight-hundred ball just to keep ahead of them. I think their starting rotation is not that strong. OTOH the bullpen is deep. We're well past the halfway mark and for them to miss the postseason would be a major collapse.
Yankees team is 3rd in the AL in on-base percentage, behind Red Sox and Astros.
There’s only a dozen or so regulars in the AL hitting .300+.
Not to make too much of a comparison, but Mariano Rivera was essentially a one-pitch guy. You knew the cutter was coming, and you couldn’t hit it. Britton is a one-pitch guy. You kn ow he’s giving you a slider, and you can’t hit it.
Exactly! That’s why I always thought he could last a long time, even after he slows down a little. Most relievers have a two or three year span of effectiveness. Mariano was the freak & Britton may be also.
I think you mean sinker? He throws mainly an upper 90s sinker with lots of movement.
Freegards
Correct. Sinker. And boy, does it sink!
Rivera said he discovered the split-finger by accident while warming up in the bullpen in Detroit, and the pitching coach (Mel Stottlemyre) thought it was a mistake.
Sinkers are great. They induce a lot of ground balls. And ground balls dont leave the park.
