On July 6, Gabby Giffords’ gun control group retweeted NPR criticism of the “good guy with a gun” scenario and described claims of armed citizens defending themselves as a “myth.”

I too have never seen the use of a gun in self-defense.
But twice an illegal immigrant Mexican with concealed carry saved my life by pulling his weapon and chasing away my attacker.
Of course, I have heard numerous stories from others about self-defense, both by illegals and legals. Back when, illegals felt like they could not call the police. So they practiced concealed carry. They are the perfect proof of John Lott’s thesis.
So do cops. They rarely use their guns too.
So do most military.
Lets disarm all the government workers socthat society can be safer.

Funny, I personally know two people who used firearms to save themselves. One an attempted car-jacking (reported to LE), the other an attempted home invasion (not reported). So from my experience, available statistics are going to under-report legal self-defense use. Actual use may be double what is reported and tracked.

Most self-defense with a firearm instances go unreported because the gun was not fired. Just holding it on the perp was enough to stop them. Win-win.

while the first stat doesn’t sound like much (15.7% state they definitely saved a life by use of gun) 15.7% of 2,500,000 = 400,000 lives per year are saved (likely more- these are just the lives that people felt were in danger of dying)
So in 10 years- that is 4,000,000 people definitely saved by a gun. The left made a huge deal about how many soldiers were killed in Iraq during Bush’s term- citing the deaths every day in the news paper in an attempt to malign president Bush by ‘proving how terrible’ the war was due to the deaths-
I am not diminishing the deaths in iraq one bit- It was tragic that Saddam forced a war and soldiers lost their lives defending our country and freeing Iraqi people from a brutal brutal dictator- but the point is that approx 7,000 were killed in iraq- and the left went absolutely ballistic over that- yet 4,000,000 have their lives saved by guns in 10 years in America alone,- and the left downplay this as ‘insignificant’? Just goes to show the massive hypocrisy of the left!

Well, Gabby...get off your fat ass and try it. See if it’s true.
Some years ago, I lived in N Calif. The well known local drug dealer on that road came into my driveway, parked & opened my gate-—left it open —a felony where livestock are housed——and kept walking toward my front door.
He was declaring that I had thrown gravel & broken his windshield. I had thrown gravel at him whenever I was near the road because of his excessive speeding, but I always only hit the back of his truck-—he was going too fast.
I stood at the top of my 9 steps leading to my front door, and pulled out my 12 gauge shotgun. Told him to stop. He said I wouldn’t shoot. Told him he could find out, it was his choice to either turn around or keep coming.
After a staring contest of about 45 seconds, he turned around, got into his truck, left my gate open—again, a felony where livestock are concerned—and drove off, spraying gravel all over my driveway.
I called the Sheriff. Told him what had happened. I asked him one question:
“What would have happened to me IF I had shot that SOB OUTSIDE my LOG house?” (If he had gotten inside, no one would have heard me screaming).
There was a pause...then the Sheriff said:
I think we would have thrown you a party.
The drug dealer was found dead about 12 months later. Thought to be a drug deal gone bad, and I am pretty sure no one spent much time looking for his killer.
The bottom line?
I was about 60 when that happened.
I will go to my grave POSITIVELY CERTAIN that if I did not have that shotgun on that day, I would not be writing this now. He would have killed me. I was ready to shoot him—before he could get a foot up on my steps.
That is why people have guns.
You are 100% right. I’ve been saying this at this site for years.
Back in the late 1960s I worked nights in a state mental asylum while attending college, days. The lunatics who shot up Gifford, sandy hook, the Batman movie, and just about any mass shooting you can think of…except those done by Muslims terrorists…look all the word like my charges in the nut house. Then the Marxists ( calling themselves progressives) insisted that we free all the lunatics. This is s plan to destroy America. And They’re doing a bang up job.
Remember, when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. I'll be an outlaw...

Truth is, the more good people armed or even perceived to be armed, the fewer the instances of the need for using a gun in self defense.
