The owner of the Red Hen explains why she asked Sarah Huckabee Sanders to leave
The Washington Post ^ | 06/23/18 | Avi Selk

Posted on 06/23/2018 1:56:12 PM PDT by Simon Green

Stephanie Wilkinson was at home Friday evening — nearly 200 miles from the White House — when the choice presented itself.

Her phone rang about 8 p.m. It was the chef at the Red Hen, the tiny farm-to-table restaurant that she co-owned just off Main Street in Lexington, Va.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders had just walked in and sat down, the chef informed her.

“He said the staff is a little concerned. What should we do?” Wilkinson told The Washington Post. “I said I’d be down to see if it’s true.”

It seemed unlikely to her that President Trump’s press secretary should be dining at a 26-seat restaurant in rural Virginia. But then, it was unlikely that her entire staff would have misidentified Sanders, who had arrived last to a table of eight booked under her husband’s name.

As she made the short drive to the Red Hen, Wilkinson knew only this:

She knew Lexington, population 7,000, had voted overwhelmingly against Trump in a county that voted overwhelmingly for him. She knew the community was deeply divided over such issues as Confederate flags. She knew, she said, that her restaurant and its half-dozen servers and cooks had managed to stay in business for 10 years by keeping politics off the menu.

And she knew — she believed — that Sarah Huckabee Sanders worked in the service of an “inhumane and unethical” administration. That she publicly defended the president’s cruelest policies, and that that could not stand.

“I’m not a huge fan of confrontation,” Wilkinson said. “I have a business, and I want the business to thrive. This feels like the moment in our democracy when people have to make uncomfortable actions and decisions to uphold their morals.”

Ya got me. :-)

Seriously,it was the land-owner thing.

My mother was an immigrant who never owned property-—she became a citizen——and would NEVER miss voting. She had to walk to the polls, did it in any type of weather, and loved this country.

She made certain my brother and I did the same thing when we were old enough to vote.

She knew, she said, that her restaurant and its half-dozen servers and cooks had managed to stay in business for 10 years by keeping politics off the menu...well it's on the menu now, lady, and I'm betting that it isn't to the taste of at least half the people who might otherwise come through your door - enjoy Welfare.....

Well, I think she’s going to own it. I hope she has some savings.

As Americans we have rights and as a business owner she has the right to refuse service but with freedom comes responsibility so be careful when you use them and only if you are ready for repercussions that might ensue. I would never eat at that restaurant because of their rudeness. And I read earlier that Trump won the county the restaurant is located in with 62%. I imagine business is going to slow down...a lot.

Scratching my head on that.

See post #41 for an explanation. From #41:

In most cases, refusal of service is warranted where a customer’s presence in the restaurant detracts from the safety, welfare, and well-being of other patrons and the restaurant itself.

All she has to say in court is that her rabid leftist clientele might riot if they knew a Trump supporter was in the restaurant.

I support her right to throw Sanders out, and I support a conservative restaurant owner's right to throw Democrats out. In both cases, the restaurant owners should have to live with the consequences. In this particular case, I hope she is run out of business.

I also think that, in general, public accommodations laws should be modified to apply ONLY in cases of true emergency.

If lack of windows doesn’t do it in first, would be a shame if it got Kristallnacht’d because of politics. There seems to be an abundance of them

My mother was an immigrant who never owned property...

If ownership was a prerequisite, anyone like your mother who was willing to walk to the voting booth in any type of weather would have found a way to buy property.

So, instead of ownership perhaps next time we should require all voters to walk n miles to the polls. Thanks, isn't brainstorming fun?

Have a nice weekend.

I suggest any Freepers in that restaurants area to walk in sit down place a big order, drink a glass of water, and about time for the food to be ready tell the waiter that you just realized you are not at Chik-Fil-A and walk out.

Not 26 tables, she said 27 seats. That’s pretty tiny. Going to be interesting to see what happens.

I’ve always assumed Sanders was her married name...so she made a reservation in her name. I’ve used my husband’s name for 25 years, I would find it super odd if someone said I signed something or made a reservation with my husband’s name. Just thinking that was a bogus point in the article. If she had use her father’s name, would they have refused the reservation?
