Online shoppers could find costs going up after the Supreme Court did away Thursday with a decades-old precedent limiting the ability of states to collect sales tax on certain out-of-state Internet purchases.

The 5-4 ruling called the current rules “unsound and incorrect.”

No. I’ve paid sales tax from amazon in Florida for years now. Hasn’t changed my buying habits at all. Most wont even bat an eye. Probably only around 10 States this affects. Most already pay sales taxes all over the country.

Someone will come up with a web solution or business solution to solve this problem, now that there is a need. Might be a good business to start.

The businesses already in a position to do this are the Merchant Banks, i.e., card paument processors. They could add the process to the existing checkout/payment process and charge even bigger fees for the service.

A lot of online retailers have been doing this for years.

Businesses will still have to collect that sales tax for other states.

Exactly. The Supreme Court has, by judicial decree, created an obligation that did not previously exist. Now, a merchant in one state is obligated to collect tax for some other state. And, what if he doesn't do it or gets it wrong? Does this other state now have to right to go after the merchant?

Nothing in this benefits the merchants or shoppers. It only benefits the governments.

Nope, and neither are any other states that have no sales tax. The reason I mentioned Oregon is because I live in WA.

Did you see how the Supreme Court Justices voted? The conservatives on the court voted for it! Granted I am against taxes most of the time.

However, small businesses have been wiped out by main street. Why? Because people were avoiding sales taxes by making purchases online to avoid the sales tax.

So this promotes more competition vs destroying competition. It creates a more level playing field for small and medium size businesses that have been getting wiped out on main street. More competition is better for everyone and capitalism vs. monopolies that bring cronyism, socialism and ultimately communism. This is why the conservative justices were for it. Granted I do not like sales taxes. I would prefer a world with no sales tax.

For the record, if you made any purchase on line from any large business such as Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Google, Walmart, Best Buy, etc... They have been charging sales taxes for a while now.

Yes it will certainly hurt small businesses online.

I did see that. My definition of conservatism is following the Constitution and allowing each empowered branch to do it's function. That didn't happen here since Congress has the sole responsibility for interstate commerce regulation. Congress has chosen to take no action. And, no action is... no action.

Of late, I've found myself out of step with the new definition of conservative which these days seems to be a vague sort of ends justifies the means tool to restore "fairness", whatever that is.

I no longer have any faith that any elected or appointed government official is interested in limited constitutional government.

Think of it like a rigged poker game.

Would you play in a poker game knowing it was rigged against you or would you prefer a poker game where everyone is playing by the same rules, and let the best player win.

“Someone will come up with a web solution or business solution to solve this problem, now that there is a need. Might be a good business to start.”

So now your profit will be sliced even further, to pay for services made necessary because of government mandate. Like income tax preparers, tax attorneys, environmental consultants, diversity departments, etc. etc.

Barriers to entry and crony capitalism is what this is all about. Force every mom and pop shop to sell through a handful of internet shops and create millions of jobs in both government and the private sector.

Okay so it’s fair for brick and mortar businesses to be the sole bares of the sales tax burden. Bullshit cubed.

The burden is borne by the in state buyers who are required by their states' laws to report and pay their taxes.

This "fairness" argument is just blame shifting supported by deadbeats who don't want to pay their taxes and abetted by politicians like Trump who want to illegally grab easy money and who don't care about, or maybe in his case can't understand, the Constitutional separation of powers.
