But it is better to have Russia on your side, as part of a larger coalition, in balancing out the rising power of China in the East.

This meeting strikes me as something the US would have blessed and encouraged, while choosing to stay behind the scenes.

South Korea needs natural gas. Russia wants to sell natural gas to them. Since President Trump has apparently brought North Korea into the world community others want to cash in on it. It’s economics 101. Not some backstabbing like this author tries to make this sound like.

100% agreed that they need to carry their weight. However, if we’d had the same philosophy during WWI or WWII what would the world look like today? With great power comes great responsibility sometimes.

Glad to see the Russians willing to engage. Hopefully the entire world will help resolve the Korean problem. This is about world peace. Not egotistical bragging rights.

The world looks like it does today because of the collapse of the USSR. We protected our interest in WW2 and not much beyond that. We certainly didn’t seek to protect any country from the ravages of the USSR if they were not of utmost importance to our own security and prosperity.

We have no responsibilities except to ourselves and our common bond under the US Constitution.

So if the Nazis and Japan had conquered Europe and Asia, we would be doing great right now? Thanks for your enlightened opinion. You clearly have a more erudite view of global geopolitics than I do. No need to respond to this because sadly, I find myself running out of sarcastic responses.

Like I said we did what we needed to do because we were threatened. Areas where we were not threatened we didn’t help. We where also attacked by both the Japanese and Germany. As far as I can we have not been attacked by Russia and Ukraine present us with no strategic risk.

Maybe your erudite view can get around to explaining how Russia is a threat to China.

You eruditely evaded my question of what the world would be looking like today if we had stayed out of WWI and WWII. What’s laughable to me is that I know you had to look up the word erudite before reposponding.

Serously though, why the hostility? I agree with you 100% on illegals, and believe that all legal immigration should be merit based - if you can’t contribute to the betterment of the country, you don’t get in.

Let’s see you state that my vocabulary is limited and that I am hostile. Yet you ask me to predict the present based on an imaginary past. I guess you have switched to irony after using up your sarcasm.

In the present Russia does not threaten China.

By the way, I never said immigration should be merit based. But I enjoy mind readers and fortune tellers so keep at it.

I’m neither a mind reader nor a fortune teller. Just a lifetime of experience, understanding of financial systems, geopolitics and dealing with and being able to read many people throughout my career. If I implied you support merit based immigration, I apologize. I understand that you are against ALL immigration. I support merit based immigration as needed. Primarily because the education system here has been dumbed down to the point where we don’t have enough engineers or doctors or scientists because kids have been conditioned to going into esoteric fields like political sciences or social sciences and the like. It would take a generation to change that mindset, but in the meantime we need people with certain skills to maintain our dominance in the important fields. I’m totally against immigration based on quotas, but am in favour of merit based immigration by people who will adapt to our culture and way of life (regardless of what they choose to do in the privacy of their homes) and will contribute to the overall well being of the country.

” I understand that you are against ALL immigration.” On what basis did you come to that conclusion?

I am in favor of immigration. I oppose welfare in all its forms. I oppose welfare for immigrants and citizens. The battle over immigration is just a proxy war between the warring parties within our nation. We have one side that values freedom and the right to live a life free of government tyranny. In opposite is an imperious ruling class demanding submission to the state. But that is the story of western civilization writ large and the cause numerous English civil wars (including our own Revolutionary and Civil wars).

So let in as many people who are willing to work or die and who will be free or die. We cannot possibly have enough of them.

In this context, neither Russia or China is a threat to our freedom.

I will agree that the greater threat to the republic is from within. That’s how most strong civilizations perish. I wish you a good day.

Your statements would hold water if or when Russia gets new leadership. The strangest factor right now ironically is neither Russia or China — but South Korea’s own leftist government. Make no mistake, South Korea’s current officials are largely what made the Singapore Summit possible. BUT, prior to Trump entering the scene, they’re primary platform was one of Anti-Americanism, appeasement of the North, and resentment towards American presence for the divided peninsula in the first place. (Resentment based on emotions and distorted history.)

The current South Korean officials spent much of 2015-2016 suppressing pro-American figures/voices in politics AND media — even jailing the former President of Korea to 30 years over spurious charges which make the Mueller crap here at home look rational by comparison.

But the flip side is, South Korean conservatives including the former President are more hardline about the North and fear potential appeasement. So the kind of summit we saw in Singapore may not have taken place with them in charge.

Japan is interesting because while it’s fully in their interests to have peace in the peninsula, in the long term, they would view a united Korea as a competitor and threat to their status in the region. (Japanese and Korean leaders traditionally do NOT get along.)

China always operates in the name of expediency, but they share with Russia a desire to loosen America’s influence in Asia. And that is as much a priority of theirs as their own basic economic benefits. HENCE WHY THEY’VE BEEN ENABLING KIM JONG UN FOR THIS LONG IN THE FIRST PLACE!

As far as Russia/China’s relationship is concerned, look no further:
