Who needs Trump? South Korea announces alliance with Russia to stop Kim

South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev agreed today to work with North Korea in a “three-way cooperation” - pointedly leaving out the US.

Mr Moon said: “When a peace regime is established on the Korean Peninsula, economic cooperation between the South and North Korea will take off and will be expanded to three-way cooperation with Russia.”

His office did release a statement which paid the briefest of lip service to the US.

It said: “President Moon and Prime Minister Medvedev agreed to strengthen the strategic communication between the two countries to assist complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and the establishment of permanent peace, noting the positive change in conditions taking place on the Korean Peninsula, such as the two South-North Korea summits and the June 12 North Korea-US summit, are creating new possibilities for cooperation between South Korea and Russia.”

Mr Moon arrived in Moscow today for a three-day visit packed with bilateral talks.

China might prefer Russia to gain a foothold in NK rather than the US.

Interesting times.

Just stop. Russia and North Korea share a border. If Korea is to be reunified, they will need all the allies they can get against the hegemon that shares the longest part of their border to the northwest. A unified Korea allied with Russia, Japan and the US might actually have a chance to break out of China’s orbit.

Didn’t the Soviet Union and North Korea initiate a peace process in the early 1950’s bring together both Koreas in a unified peninsula?

Yes, this all would have happened without Trump’s sanctions on China and Russia and NK. It would have just spontaneously happened. /s

I think Trump referenced that all countries would be involved in denuking and maybe eventually reunification etc.

Of Course, China, Russia, SK (Moon) and NK seems to lean to socialism. This is a reason for us to have troops there to protect our the commerce of our allies.

I don’t see how this lessens Trump’s accomplishment. Russia did nothing to help the situation.

After NK withdrew from the non nuke agreement, 6 countries came together to address NK's move.

It looks like the six countries will be making individual deals with NK in exchange for denuking AND missile regs...and it makes sense.

We'll see.

I don’t think so. China views Russia as a bigger threat to them than the USA. China wants the foothold so they can benefit from the billions that would flow into NK if things work out. Their advantage would be to turn NK into another Hong Kong.

Why? Kim’s agreeing to what was agreed to at the summit so a SK alliance with Russia to stop Kim is senseless.

This is NOT a “Who needs Trump” moment. This is the Koreans looking out for Korea.

The sanctions on North Korea are UN sanctions and not just U.S. ones.

What a petty childish tone for this article. Na-na-na-na-nah - they had a meeting without you! Like it was written by a six-year-old.

They are indeed our sanctions agreed to and voted in by the UN.

They are indeed our sanctions agreed to and voted in by the UN.

But it's the UN sanctions that apply to the rest of the world.

Please, who do you think is the biggest funder of the UN? Do you believe that without US pressure this would have happened? If so, why hasn’t the UN done it for the last 30 years?
