On Sept. 27, 2017, Abel Cedeno, an 18-year-old sophomore who had been bullied for his sexuality, snapped. Cedeno says he was being mocked by two boys; he pulled a black switchblade out of his backpack and stabbed them, killing Matthew McCree, 15.
Matthews death, in the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation, was the first in New York City schools in decades. The story received substantial coverage, but his teachers and friends say the media missed the real story.

Vasquez connected me with eight of Matthews teachers and six of Matthews friends. They say he was not a bully but a very respectful kid and wicked smart.
They wanted to not only set the record straight on Matthew, but on UA Wildlife, a once-safe school that fell into chaos as new administrators implemented a new approach to school discipline.
New York was on the vanguard of a nationwide movement, spurred largely through federal coercion, to undo traditional discipline in favor of a progressive or restorative approach.
Friends of school stabbing victim wear t-shirts with his face to courtwide movement, spurred largely through federal coercion, to undo traditional discipline in favor of a progressive or restorative approach.
At UA Wildlife, meaningful consequences for misbehavior were eliminated, alternative approaches failed, and administration responded to a rising tide of disorder and violence by sweeping evidence of it under the rug. If the administrators had prioritized student safety over statistics, Matthews teachers believe he would still be alive...

Sounds very familiar.
Do *not* discipline so as to not cause problems for whatever flavor of extra-special protected identity group.
Broward received $53 million tax dollars for its efforts....then the Cruz massacre happened.
"Promise" doesnt seem like a good idea anymore.
I just keep seeing 18 year old sophomore. Dang that is kind of old to be in the 10th grade.
"Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation"
Policy to protect and conserve the animals is only is living up to their name .
Not a problem, it’s a government school, and they answer to the GOVERNMENT, not students or parents. The REAL QUESTION is how could Mathew’s parents be DUMB ENOUGH to send him to a government school, when it’s obvious they don’t have the interests of the kids in mind.
> Do *not* discipline so as to not cause problems for whatever flavor of extra-special protected identity group. <
Lots of truth there. In my neck of the woods, the do-not-discipline approach is also driven by bonus money. Principals get bonuses for reaching certain goals, one of which is reducing suspensions.
So the principals simply stop suspending disruptive students. Result: More hallway fights. More kids yelling and running around in the classroom. But the principals get to collect their bonuses, and pad their resumes. So it’s all good.
The decent students can’t learn as much with all this disruption going on. So test scores are down. Who gets all the blame for that? The teachers, of course.
I think its the same plan packaged under a different name. A friend who teaches in a suburban high school has complained to me that because of this type of program, 5% of the student body is causing 95% of the discipline problems and there is nothing the teachers can do to reign them in, and they know it.
“Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation!” WTF is that? A public school or indoctrination center?
The end result will be they will not be able to get teachers. They will have to greatly reduce standards. You’ll have high school dropouts teaching in that system.
De Blasio, too.
Democrats destroy everything they touch. It’s as if they can’t stand when strong disciplinary policies work.. Why do they constantly implement their weenie progressive policies too “fix” what is Not broken? It’s insanity.. More proof Liberalism is a mental disorder.
The Nuns handled discipline just fine in Catholic schools. Theyd kick you out of school and then your father at home took care of the rest.
Is this the “Keep Criminals in School” program?
Does anyone know whether the federal incentive for this stupid program is embodied in a formal regulation?
The victim:
An argument could be made that Abel did society a favor.
Obama took the lead to undo traditional discipline in favor of a progressive or restorative approach. This action has created chaos. Satan loves chaos.
Then why can’t Trump and DeVos undo this dysfunctional policy? That’s why I asked if the initial implementation was by regulation.. If not, then the policy is easily reversed.
Agreed. And the witness reports ever specify that the thug hit the fruit first.
Of course they say that Matthew was a “good kid” and very smart.
If he was a good kid WHY was he attacking another kid. And if he was smart was WHY he attacking a kid who was armed and indicated he was ready to kill?
Seems Matthew was just another ignorant thug.
