"With today's technologically advanced militaries, compared to the 1950's and 60's when these troops were stationed in South Korea, are the 35-40k US troops essentially a condensed sitting duck target if things were to break bad over there? "

No, this isn't just Army ground pounders, it's the air force and missiles and anti missile defense. When I say we still need bases, it's not just a bunch of grunts (like me), but high tech stuff that the Air Force and Navy can provide. We need basing rights to be able to bring in large number of forces and armor in case something goes wrong.

I agree about Germany. At this point, I’d much rather have troops in Poland and other eastern European countries than Germany. I’m ok with pulling some of these troops back to Guam but I still think we will need other bases over there, especially in the South China Sea area. I would love to get Subic and/or Clark back in the Philippines but I don’t know how doable that is.

A lot of the ground pounders and even armor can come home if the NORKS truly denuclearize but we still need Air Force and Navy assets over there. I’m not as optimistic to say 4 years because I think this denuclearization will take longer and not one troop moves (IMHO) until all the nukes are out.

Big deal. So Obama got a big participation trophy, the Nobel Prize. Trump will win the true sweepstakes, and will not need a trophy to remind himself, or the world, of what he accomplished.

Switched over to CNN this morning to see how they would handle this. They had an extensive segment covering the issue of Trump ripping up letters and WH archivists having to tape them back together fr archiving. Seriously.

This was the first thing that I saw when I awoke this morning. :) Stunning.

Love this President.

Congress is going to say and Schumer has already said that A, B, C should be in any treaty.

Well, that's not how the Treaty clause works. They're only role is advise and consent.

Here's an example: President Washington, along with Henry Knox, the Secretary of War, met with the Senate, Treaty in hand.

Washington was looking for the Senate's consent.

The Senate said....whoa...we haven't even seen it. We will look at it and advise and consent.

Washington became furious. "Then why am I here?" And Washington left the Senate in a huff.

In other words, Congress had no role in creating the Treaty.

I believe that Trump WILL NOT accept any Nobel Peace Prize. It’s now totally political as proved by Obama even being nominated.

This is right up there with Reagan and Gorbechov (sp?).

Major success on the world stage and the beginning of the end of a nuclear threat to America, Bravo!

Pull our Troops out of Germany. Let Merkel fund her own defense.

Aside from all the noise. This is the biggest deal since the Berlin Wall came down.

Great stuff and the media will be the only losers not celebrating.

Should be interesting how the media is going to turn this into a negative.

So far their main criticism is: 1) We need details (they cannot see the BIG picture here) 2) How can we trust Kim, he stole from us and screwed Bush, Clinton and Obama (LOL) admitting these Presidents were failures on the world stage. 3) We're giving up too much (yet we don't know this because we have no details)

Could we open up a new base in the Philippines or dare I say it Vietnam?

LOL! No. Both countries kicked us out, neither one wants us back. If we pull out of Korea then the only place for them is in the U.S.

...we need to re-assure our regional allies we are not letting them twist in the wind.

Or maybe we are? The President has been quite clear on his belief that Europe and South Korea and Japan need to defend themselves. He was quite vocal on the cost of the joint military exercises; I don't doubt he's more concerned with the overall costs. I think we'll see troops out of Korea, and possibly out of Japan as well.

Huh?

And that’s a left-wing Brit rag.

U.S. carriers have made port calls in Hong Kong from time to time. That doesn’t mean the Chinese will let us base troops there.

Seems we can trust Kim Jong Un more than we can trust Trudeau.
