Kelly Marie Tran, who plays Rose Tico in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, has deleted all of the images from her Instagram account. This presumably came after an extended period of harassment and abuse the actress received from so-called Star Wars fans, particularly those who hated The Last Jedi and her character. Two years prior, Daisy Ridley also deleted her Instagram page following harassment she received after expressing sentiments in favor of gun control. One angry commenter replied with, Just shut up, Ridley, and make another Star Wars movie. For the past six months or so, the director of The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson, has faced near endless abuse on Twitter by those who cant get over their dislike of the film. Even the most benign tweet from the intensely patient and graceful Johnson will result in mentions full of harassment and abuse. As of the writing of this post, author Chuck Wendig, who has written several Star Wars novels, is facing a barrage of hate from supposed fans who claim he is part of the "ruining" of the franchise. A "satirical" fan, @FakingStarWars, went so far as to make a t-shirt with the slogan "Blocked by Chuck Wendig", which uses his likeness. Wendig has said he will "lawyer up".
All of this happens in the shadow of one of the biggest franchises in pop culture hitting its first financial stumbling block with the under-performing nature of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Some of those fans are quick to take the credit for the films slump by claiming its sign that their anti-Last Jedi boycott has worked...
It would be unfair and too general to say that Star Wars has a fandom problem. What it has is a white male fandom problem.

After Solo bombed, it was mysteriously revealed that an actress deleted her instagram account, reportedly due to harassment - assuming that is true, virtually no one who objected to The Last Jedi and the behavior of LucasFilm were involved, would not have been involved, and didn't even know she had an instagram account. But now, you see the narrative has nothing to do with whether or not she was actually harassed - but that Star Wars fans don't like the current movies because they are all evil bigots and any criticism therefore has no validity. Sort of like if you disagreed with anything Obama said or did, it was due to racism - even if you opposed the same policies purely on their merits before you had ever even heard of Obama, it was still racism.
Rose Tico was a terribly written character - but now if you had that opinion that means you engaged in, or supported, harassment of the actress (as though we believe it is her fault she was given a character with no development because she has Asian ethnicity).
If they can’t take the heat...they should get out of the kitchen.
But make us a sandwich first.
The Star Wars fandom always loved Princess Leia.
I wonder if the longevity and quality of life depends on the characters in the star wars “franchise”....just thinkin’
This viral marketing didn’t work for Lady Ghostbusters either.
Black Panther has an even more serious problem!
So does any movie with Hugh Grant!
They don’t understand that they are paid to entertain, not to tell people what to think.
the problem Lucas films has is militant liberals using the franchise to spout off. another problem they have is employees who go on social media and attack there fan base for not liking the movies.....this is a PR problem that Kathleen Kennedy created and would not be there if she had told her employees to not engage the fan base over there hatred of ‘The last Jedi”
The producers and directors of Star Wars hate their own fans, and want to appeal to a completely different crowd. When Jar Jar Abrams said “Star Wars fans hate women” because they don’t like it that Luke Skywalker is now a defeated, sniveling coward to make way for the feminist movement, I decided never to pay actual money for another Star Wars movie.
Lucas big mistake was selling all the rights to Disney he should have never done this. Could have even created his own studio.
Yup, and speaking for myself, Natalie Portman was the best thing about the prequels
Black Panther was an enormous hit, Lando was beloved, people love Zoe Saldana in mega hits, they loved the Asian actress playing Mantis, Samuel L Jackson in Avengers, many others. The problem was the movie.
What a bunch of dribble. Ruin a successful franchise and blame white males for it.
The fact that the author of this tripe felt compelled to add up the speaking parts and to assume that there somehow must be a 50/50 balance in speaking parts between men and women tells you all you need to know.
Likewise with some kind of “need” to have “more diversity”. If it fits then fine but that there should be some kind of quota as she clearly thinks there should is ridiculous.
Next, a huge chunk of the fans of this franchise do happen to have a white penis. If a lot of that very large cohort doesn’t like what Disney has taken the franchise, then yes, it has a problem with the entire fanbase. Ask any business if they’re prepared to just write off half or more of their customers.
She then goes on to spew angry bile at anybody who has a white penis. Get over it toots. Nobody cares about your daddy issues.
“Black Panther has an even more serious problem!”
I’ll say it again: the numbers were doctored on the gross receipts for BP. I’m in the industry. Most people here in Hollywood knows the Regal movie chain is choc full of libs and one should know the difference is between SITTING/WATCHING AUDIENCE vs BUYING AUDIENCE.
Anyone ever observe the “lines” in the movie theater on the second week of BP?
I C W U D T !
That's my second ROFL moment of the night -- the other was on the "Merkel/Trump photo goes viral" thread.
Who knew there were so many ‘white males’ in China as well...where both TLJ and Solo bombed.
Completely agree with everything you said except that - I can't agree with that part at all...a big chunk of the current fan base started with those films and Revenge of the Sith is an excellent film in my opinion.
