Kirstjen Nielsen, the homeland security secretary, told colleagues she was close to resigning after President Trump berated her on Wednesday in front of the entire cabinet for what he said was her failure to adequately secure the nations borders, according to several current and former officials familiar with the episode.
Ms. Nielsen, who is a protégée of John F. Kelly, the White House chief of staff, has drafted a resignation letter but has not submitted it, according to two of the people. As the head of the Department of Homeland Security, Ms. Nielsen is in charge of the 20,000 employees who work for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Mr. Trumps anger toward Ms. Nielsen, who was sitting several seats to his left at the meeting, was part of a lengthy tirade in which the president railed at his cabinet about what he said was its lack of progress toward sealing the countrys borders against illegal immigrants, according to one person who was present at the meeting.
Asked about the heated exchange at the meeting, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary, said Thursday that the president is committed to fixing our broken immigration system and our porous borders.
In a statement, Ms. Nielsen said she intended to continue to direct the department to do all we can to implement the presidents security-focused agenda. She said Mr. Trump was rightly frustrated that existing loopholes and the lack of congressional action have prevented this administration from fully securing the border.
Tyler Q. Houlton, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security, disputed that Ms. Nielsen had drafted a resignation letter and was close to resigning, calling those assertions false.

Tomorrow the failing New York Times will be telling us she was vacationing in Jamaica with Pompeo.
Too many government officials have never learned what accountability looks like and - when performance fails to meet expectations - feels like.
The introduction of true accountability for performance in government, starting with senior leaders, is one of the greatest contributions this President can make to the United States!
I used to think that “IBTZ” was the sound of someone getting zotted. Like those electric bug zappers.
What he needs is a ZOT!
raiderboy is probably that professional ass hat troll PJ Foggy.
NYT Fake News. It’s time to take away NYT’s press credentials.
Tell her to just buck up and do her job. “No excuses, Sir!”
Did she deny she was going to resign?? No she did not. That is so simple.
I would have told her....if you cant/wont do the job Ill find someone who will.
Im glad hes tough. These are his employees.
Actually, yes, she did.
Oh. I missed that. She denied this report as totally false? That is significant. It better be false.
They let him stick around. Not sure why.
All of the fake news, he said/she said drama aside, I whole heartedly share the sentiment of the President and anger at those he delegates to do the right job and are subpar. Immigration and our border is top priority. The buck stops at the President but everyone in the Executive Branch equally cannot pass the buck or become derelict in their duties.
If she cant find a way to shut down the border, to turn back illegal aliens, then she should resign.
I wonder if Pompeo or Bolton might not have a suggestion for someone who could seal the border.
So true. I am just a citizen but i am sick of this letting these aliens just walk in. Stop them!!!
CEOs do this stuff all time. Steve Jobs was merciless. Only prissy career government hacks cry over it.
“according to several current and former officials familiar with the episode” = rumors or lies = fake news = not worth reading or commenting about ...
if she assigned 1/2 her 20,000 employees along the border it would help. What the heck are they being paid for -
