Kirstjen Nielsen, the homeland security secretary, told colleagues she was close to resigning after President Trump berated her on Wednesday in front of the entire cabinet for what he said was her failure to adequately secure the nations borders, according to several current and former officials familiar with the episode.
Ms. Nielsen, who is a protégée of John F. Kelly, the White House chief of staff, has drafted a resignation letter but has not submitted it, according to two of the people. As the head of the Department of Homeland Security, Ms. Nielsen is in charge of the 20,000 employees who work for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Mr. Trumps anger toward Ms. Nielsen, who was sitting several seats to his left at the meeting, was part of a lengthy tirade in which the president railed at his cabinet about what he said was its lack of progress toward sealing the countrys borders against illegal immigrants, according to one person who was present at the meeting.
Asked about the heated exchange at the meeting, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary, said Thursday that the president is committed to fixing our broken immigration system and our porous borders.
In a statement, Ms. Nielsen said she intended to continue to direct the department to do all we can to implement the presidents security-focused agenda. She said Mr. Trump was rightly frustrated that existing loopholes and the lack of congressional action have prevented this administration from fully securing the border.
Tyler Q. Houlton, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security, disputed that Ms. Nielsen had drafted a resignation letter and was close to resigning, calling those assertions false.

More BS news? The meeting was just yesterday. How would former officials be familiar with the episode?
More fake news from the failing NYT.
The paper that slammed Mike Pompeo for being AWOL from Trump’s Iran deal decision.
That’s why they print lies.
Fix the leaks.
Drain the water from the swamp and the leaks will be gone.
NYT = News somewhere between exaggerated/twisted to pure BULLCRAP!
Your act wore thin a long time ago.
Anonymous sources: “X”
Named sources: “Not X”
Headline: “X!!!!!”
LOL!
Trump needs his own initiative to set up the leakers. Target them and make them double agents.
Not credible.
She should feel the anger of Trumps base on this issue. She had it easy.
It took two reporters to compile this report?
The more journalists assigned to a story, the more lies it contains.
Get out, troll.
“current and former officials”...
Yes, but they weren’t White House officials, just officials who worked for the New York Times, or homeless people, or the janitor.
Even his staunchest allies will generally admit that Trump has a short fuse and has been known to use blistering language when he is not happy. Sometimes that can be a positive and other times not. I remember the one and only instance after boot camp where a senior NCO got in my face and gave me a dressing down for something that if called trivial would be overstating its significance. After he finished venting I politely told him that if he ever addressed me in that manner again he had best make sure he has an appointment with the base dentist first. He avoided me thereafter.
Trump needs to learn that there is a time and place for that. But it should be rare. Loyal people don’t like being talked to that way.
Yes, indeed— this BS article is yet ANOTHER cabinet member they are trying to pick off. Nielsen is tough. We don’t even know if this happened... the railing so called. If she called it BS, then this is simply another provocation.
They NEVER did this to Reince Priebus (agent in place).
They have tried it about Sessions, several times. And it has clearly taken hold of several FReepers.
Trump’s executive style is assumed by lots of “writers’ who know nothing about what is going on.
It would be well, as Trump plays the media so well- that Trump not allow the media to play HIM.
The question is, who recommended her? That person is the one who must be dealt with.
Im glad Trump knows what should happen, is impatient to see an important thing done now, and if she is not used to this, she should grow up or resign.
Trump quickly replaces people who do not get the job done.
