WASHINGTON -- President Trump responded Sunday to reports of a suspected chemical attack in the Syrian city of Douma, blaming Syrian President Bashar Assad and his international allies for the apparent attack that left dozens dead and hundreds injured. In some of his most critical comments directed at Russian President Vladimir Putin to date, Mr. Trump threatened that there's a "big price ... to pay" for those backing the Assad regime.
Syrian opposition activists and rescuers said Sunday that a poison gas attack on the rebel-held town of Douma near the capital of Damascus killed at least 40 people. The alleged attack has been denied by the Syrian and Russian governments. Russia is Syria's closest ally and has a major military presence in the country.
Reports of the latest attack which appeared to target civilians and young children could not be independently verified.

Needs to give Putin 1 hour notice to clear his troops from Syrian bases and fortifications, then simply order a massive wave of airstrikes, cruise missiles, to hit any and all military bases, fortifications, and anything military in that country. Should level the “palace” or whereever Animal Assad is. Declare open hunting season and not stop until they surrender.

These poor women and children were most likely kidnapped Alawite villagers being held as prisoners and bargaining chips by a last hold-out militant militia that just accepted Russian-Syrian army terms of surrender and is now being evacuated on luxury buses from Douma

Yes, and opening up the city as Trump demands is a first step, then an investigation on where and who launched the attack. Maybe a rogue group. But once the culprits are clear, give them a chance to surrender, else kill them without mercy.

I’m sure Bolton will push for clear and decisive action. As slowhandluke cautions above, we do need to be careful we know who the culprits are carrying out the chemical attacks. I agree. Best do know who rather then go in and kill them all. I do trust that Trump will take action once he knows who to take action against. He’s not Obama.

Why?
Assad has won. There may be a few small holdouts, but why would he risk everything, for them. These Middle Eastern rulers aren’t as dumb as some want them to be. And one of the reason’s they rule the way they do, is because they have to. Assad doesn’t want anymore outside involvement. He knows that by doing something like this, he risks outside involvement. But, so does his opposition. They just have to be the victims and point the finger at him in the hopes that they world will take him out. They’re getting someone else to do their dirty work, since they have failed.
Assad gains absolutely nothing by using chemicals against his own people.
I like your way of thinking. One problem in this situation has always been that in hurting Assad (who no doubt deserves to be hurt) you're strengthening the position of people who are just as bad, if not worse. The emotional aspect of it, i.e., seeing the suffering of innocent children, tends to exert a powerful influence over the desire to punish the offender ... but that's not always in our best interest.
But what is our interest? Syria is a mess, likely no one there but Kurds and a few remaining Christians are allies. Syria is not in a position to attack or threaten us in the region, around the world, or here in the US, so straight up, no interest.
But we cannot standby and witness chemical attacks, indiscriminate killing, and genocide. Maybe we are fighting a proxy war in Syria, maybe this is fallout from our invasion of Iraq, but we have been part of the mess and I don't see how we walk away from it with any integrity.
Sadly, unless the all kill each other off first, we'll have to step in and do something more than kick the can down the road. Interdict weapons, destroy the military infrastructure, seem like good starts.
Besides, the refugee flow out of Syria is a concern. We do not need any of these folks here in America. Trump promised to create and defend safe havens in Syria for them. Where are they?

I voted for him too, but not for that reason. I think the Iraq war was one of the few positive things Bush did. It put terrorism sponsors on notice that the U.S. would come after them personally. I think we're still reaping the benefits.
