Census citizenship question sparks firestorm of protest

Are you a citizen of the United States?

It seems like a simple enough question. But the Trump administration’s plan to add it to the 2020 census has caused a firestorm of protest.

A multi-state lawsuit, led by New York’s Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, is being brought to prevent the question from appearing on the census. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra has filed a separate lawsuit over the same issue.

Opponents claim the citizenship question will keep people from filling out the census, especially those not legally residing in the U.S. As Schneiderman put it in a release, the Trump Administration has made a “reckless decision [that] cuts to the heart of this sacred obligation—and will create an environment of fear and distrust in immigration communities.”

The result of undercounting, Schneiderman adds, would “deprive our states of their fair share of hundreds of billions in federal funds” and “threaten our states’ fair representation in Congress.”

~snip~

For instance, in the 2000 long form, the question was “Is this person a CITIZEN of the United States?” There were five choices. The first four categories were citizens: born in the U.S., born in a territory of the U.S., born abroad to American parents or naturalized. The fifth choice was “No, not a citizen of the United States.”

However, in 2010, there was no long form (it had been replaced by the ongoing American Community Survey, which is sent to approximately 3.5 million addresses a year) and thus no citizenship question in the official census. The Trump administration now plans to bring it back. While the question’s been around a long time, it would be returning to the short form for the first time since 1950.

This is the first article that I've seen the census citizenship issue fully addressed through the years, 0bama eliminated the question in the 2010 census.

Spurred and funded by the Leftist enemies of America including the DNC and their operatives like Soros, Obama, and Co.

The “protesters” are by-and-large the Left’s “useful idiots”.

“Firestorm of protest”

The Leftist tactic we see over and over: They go apes**t over anything we do, and expect us to shut up and take it when they do something radical

The Right needs to do this and stop being so polite

Conservatives are like abused spouses/significant others. We DO take it for a long time They EXPECT us to take it for a long time. We decide not to take it and THEY act like the abused, crying “victim” all the while.

This is when ICE should Swarm these States by the Thousands and ARREST All Illegal Aliens, without Exception, and then Prosecute the Public Employee's for numerous violations of federal immigration law.

“Census citizenship question sparks firestorm of protest”

Maybe among those whose phoney baloney jobs depend on “rights” of Illegals.

Love to see poll results of a simple “Should immigration status be a census question ?” Guaranteed 80% in the affirmative. Similar to the percentage that want to see ALL immigration reduced.

Agreed...In my view there’s no valid reason to not ask the citizenship question and illegal aliens have rights, none.

I’ll say it again, Trump should offer a compromise: count illegals as three-fifths, just to see what happens.

As always BS. If they don’t fill it out, census takers will come to their residence and have them fill it out.

Only liberal logic could come up with this.

"Our very liberal states have lots of illegals "Undercounting illegals will deprive our states of their fair share of hundreds of billions in federal funds”

Conservative states without illegal "sanctuary" policies have fewer illegals.

Therefore the liberal, pro-illegal states are arguing that the law-abiding conservative states must cross-subsidize them with their taxes! Killing such cross-subsidization was a cornerstone argument of killing SALT tax deductibility at the federal level. Killing SALT would lead to MORE fairness in the tax code.

Libs again are arguing that counting illegal residents in the census is somehow "fair."

I would agree that California might lose three districts minimum...same for Florida.

So what is the problem?

And there are valid reasons for collecting the data. Hmmm, I wonder if Facebook already knows?

But seriously, the question is valid, and there are reasons a person could be here and not be a citizen. Reasons that are perfectly legal. So count the citizens and non-citizens and give the government the true data. Then let the reapportionment use the data for what the constitution says.

Oh, and if you want to base welfare on total numbers, you have that option too.

Well said...Non citizen legal immigrants would have no problem answering the question, it’s only the illegals who would have the problem.

These leftist politicians in liberal sanctuary cities are fully aware of that but they want it both ways, screw ‘em.
