‘Roseanne’ returns with a political message for 2018

President Trump was as important a character in the premiere of the “Roseanne” revival as John Goodman. More than 20 years after the working-class sitcom went off the air, the show returned with the original cast and modern politics.

A supersized, hour-long premiere Tuesday night finds sisters Roseanne Conner (Roseanne Barr) and Jackie Harris (Laurie Metcalf) at odds over their voting histories.

“What’s up, deplorable?” says Jackie, decked out in a “Nasty Woman” sweatshirt and pussyhat, in her first on-screen appearance.

The show was great............ we taped it and watched it twice. It was better the second time.

The ratings should be very good.

Enjoyed the political jokes. The transgender grandson not so much.

This sounds remarkably refreshing! I’ll have to look it up and watch! I guess I can get it on youtube?

We didn't watch Roseanne much during the original run, but not for any particular reason. We just moved away from sitcoms, in general. The few moments I saw of it back then, I thought had a certain familiarity to it, because it kind-of reminded me of our family. (although they were far more outrageous...)

I generally belong to the 'Keep politics out of entertainment' camp. But being bombarded by liberal crap so often, it's refreshing to see 'our side' once in a while. My wife is conservative as can be, but watches those Law & Order shows that are constantly spewing socially 'relevant' issues up from a liberal viewpoint. Makes me want to hurl.

We inadvertently tuned in about halfway through the new Roseanne show last night, and decided to wait until we can catch the whole program on-demand, maybe tonight...

Just don’t let her sing the National Anthem again.

I found the political jokes refreshing.

hot hot hot pantsuit on fire

I agree about the grandson. It may deter me from watching the show...although it does portray today's issues. They did a nice job teaching the kid how to overcome stuff in school.

The pregnancy thing was bad also.

Is the world so screwed up today?

Show was a bit of an eye opener.

I did catch a bit of Roseanne on Kimmel. LOL. She put him in his place.

I wanted to hate it. I found it remarkably balanced and pretty honest.

It’s perfect to have Laurie Metcalf as a pussy-hat wearing lib! I assume the character is still single. Of course, the character was once a cop as well but maybe people won’t remember that.

180 degrees opposite as Seldon Coopers Mom on the Big Bang Theory = Bible toting Texan.

How did she ever get John Goodman to agree to come back? He’s an extremely fine actor, but a Liberal loon.

They actually ran TWO shows last night. In both, I though the writing was good.. very witty and crisp. But, the acting... particularly Roseanne, was awful. Her timing was WAY off.

It seemed better in the second show. Maybe, she needs to get back into the swing of things... and, the writing was even better as they started moving away, a little, from the original character setups.

Should be interesting to see where they go with this.

The thing I liked was that it showed all sides. So sad that shows don’t do that anymore. It is all liberal everyday. Rosanne was right to show both political spectrums. Jackie was hilarious. Rosanne did a great job. The Grandson at least says he is a boy....that was a relief quite frankly.

Would we really want more publicity? I sorta like our quasi anonymity.

“How did she ever get John Goodman to agree to come back?”

I would imagine that he appreciates Rosanne for making him not only rich but a celebrity. He’d never have the success without Rosanne. He knows that.

Cool fact for those who don’t know. Laurie Metcalf’s real life daughter (Zoe Perry) plays the younger version of Sheldon’s mom on “Young Sheldon”. She also played the child version of Jackie in flashbacks during the original run of “ Roseanne”.

Nothing in the show indicated the grandson was trans.
