President Donald Trump, who repeatedly insisted during the 2016 campaign that Mexico would pay for a wall along the southern border, is privately pushing the U.S. military to fund construction of his signature project.
Trump has told advisers that he was spurned in a large spending bill last week when lawmakers appropriated only $1.6 billion for the border wall. He has suggested to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and congressional leaders that the Pentagon could fund the sprawling project, citing a "national security" risk.
After floating the notion to several advisers last week, Trump told House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., that the military should pay for the wall, according to three people familiar with the meeting last Wednesday in the White House residence. Ryan offered little reaction to the idea, these people said, but senior Capitol Hill officials later said it was an unlikely prospect.
Trump's pursuit of defense dollars to finance the U.S.-Mexico border wall underscores his determination to fulfill a campaign promise and build the barrier despite resistance in the Republican-led Congress. The administration's last-minute negotiations with lawmakers to secure billions more for the wall failed, and Trump grudgingly signed the spending bill Friday after a short-lived veto threat.

From JamesP81 yesterday:
Trump is finished in my household. If I wanted unconstitutional infringements of the 2nd and 4th Amendments I’d have voted for Clinton.
Screw this guy.
“...according to three people familiar with the meeting....”
This doesn’t sound made up at all....
Now that three people have said this, I’m convinced the POTUS is an ineffective fool, going around asking everyone for silly things and getting turned down.
Why did I vote for this clown? If only I had listened to three people in 2016, we could have had a real POTUS, like a Clinton or a Bush.
Note to self: Next time three people say something I should listen.
Nailed it.
Amen Trump knew exactly what he was doing. MAGA!
Yeah I got that silly thing called a job that would make helping build it a little tough :)
And I PAY enough in taxes so that diverting from the military, and it is REALLY not diverting as it is a DEFENSE issue, is the answer.
Let the Army Corp of Engineers design it and let the army build it
Where’s Sam Kinison saying just “DO IT!!!!” “DO IT!!!”
In the photo, those are not replacements. They are 30 feet high. Get it?
How is “WHAT RELEVANT?” You make no reference to any comment of mine. If you go back through the comments as opposed to running mouth before reading-you will see the comments others made about the military funds being for manpower and what should be equipment, spare parts, combat readiness etc. Our military is damn well paid. Look at E-1 and 2’s getting housing allowances. Since when did some idiot think a private E-1 should be married? I recall $66 a month as a PVT E-2 in 1966. Where did you serve then?
This is correct. Mattis opposes Trump's idea to use military funding for the wall. Mattis' days may be numbered.
Good point.
Our Military is damn well paid.
How do you think Gen’s and ADM’s got nominated and promoted under Obozzo? First we had don’t ask-—tell. Then full blown PC/MC senior officers who turned their head to fags and lesbians. Mattis in a foxhole? Two SF teams had won that war and then the usual BS with conventional troops.
We'll get the $$$ back during the next few years of funding!!!
We'll just borrow $20 Billion from the fund
