Trump privately presses for U.S. military to pay for border wall
Chicago Tribune ^

President Donald Trump, who repeatedly insisted during the 2016 campaign that Mexico would pay for a wall along the southern border, is privately pushing the U.S. military to fund construction of his signature project.

Trump has told advisers that he was spurned in a large spending bill last week when lawmakers appropriated only $1.6 billion for the border wall. He has suggested to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and congressional leaders that the Pentagon could fund the sprawling project, citing a "national security" risk.

After floating the notion to several advisers last week, Trump told House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., that the military should pay for the wall, according to three people familiar with the meeting last Wednesday in the White House residence. Ryan offered little reaction to the idea, these people said, but senior Capitol Hill officials later said it was an unlikely prospect.

Trump's pursuit of defense dollars to finance the U.S.-Mexico border wall underscores his determination to fulfill a campaign promise and build the barrier despite resistance in the Republican-led Congress. The administration's last-minute negotiations with lawmakers to secure billions more for the wall failed, and Trump grudgingly signed the spending bill Friday after a short-lived veto threat.

So after reading this article, what has happened in the last couple weeks is starting to look a little more clear.

Not saying I KNOW what happened, but my theory is this:

The pricks on Capitol Hill promised Trump wall funding and boosts for the military in exchange for passage of their pork. And I'm sure they downplayed their garbage to butter up the President.

Our President wants to help everyone, while simultaneously making sure we go into the midterms election on a nice foot where everyone is happy. He wanted Congress to be able to go back to their constituents with their own promises fulfilled - but with a thanks to the President for passage of the Omnibus.

Bill came to Trump's desk at the very last possible minute, so all he could do was zip thru it without being able to hold enough of these scumbags to their BS. Push came to shove, and it turned out that all he was getting was $1.6 billion, which was not at all what he wanted, nor what these vile rat finks promised him.

Time was running out, so he brought the issue to Mattis who told him he could pass the bill, and move the military funding around by declaring it a national security issue. Trump probably would have preferred to fight it out with these a-holes, and get the funding in the way that he was promised, but then the military wouldn't have received what it needed either. Time was literally of the essence.

The veto threat tweet on Friday morning was probably the culmination of the President going back to some of these scum-lappers with a "you promised and you lied". I'll bet some of them weren't even taking his calls. Did everyone notice how many Dems voted NAY on this...? I think they were onto what the President decided to do int he 11th hour.

This is why he was so pissed last Friday. And why he said he'd never sign anything like this again.

I think he did it for the military and knowing that he could move some money around -- with the help of some presidential powers as well as Mad Dog's cooperation.

His demeanor on Friday wasn't dejection, it was him being genuinely pissed off that so many in Congress hoodwinked him. Over what - a wall to help protect our country and its economy?

Even more reason to vote every last one of these f'ng dirtbags OUT in November.

I hope that's how this went, and also how it will go down.

And as far as this in the stupid Tribune article: "senior Capitol Hill officials later said it was an unlikely prospect." Yeah, I don't believe any "officials" said anything, and if they did, they were clueless. So that can be safely ignored if you ask me.

I have a faith our President will get this wall funded and built. He's a fighter, and a counter puncher - and he has our backs. He's not going to get sucked down into the Swamp over this - or anything. Do people really think Trump wants this magnificent base he spent some much time and energy (high energy) pissed off at him for the rest of his life???

There are a finite number of law abiding U.S. citizens who would be more than willing to donate monies to this cause as well as come and help build it themselves, even for free!

Oh and I forgot about the DACA travesty and how that is embroiled in a ll this.

The Dems demanding DACA recipients get a path was long gone by the time this bill arrived. Trump was hoping to use that as leverage, but these bastards seemed to not give a crap.

I hope Trump keeps reminding the country about that.........

Well said! You are the first one who has made the point that his veto would have jeopardized his military funding. If they took out the military funding after a veto, Trump would have been screwed. Without military strength, there would have been no peace and that would have led to his impeachment. The entire thing was a trap. I am glad he dodged the bullet.

If we are going to us the military then we can make Mexico build a border wall by attacking it.

“You are the first one who has made the point that his veto would have jeopardized his military funding. If they took out the military funding after a veto, Trump would have been screwed. “

That’s just agitprop based on fantasy. Congress can not overturn the veto (if it could, which is far from a sure deal) AND change the bill at its pleasure.

The inverted priority of funding the military for national security before funding the wall is a piss poor excuse.
Funding the wall is the FIRST and foremost national security goal to stop the future democrat voters flood. If not, you can have the all the first class, hugely rich military you want, it is useless in the hands of a democrat President, Hussein Obama has largely demonstrated that.

That makes no Constitutional sense. Congress only has the power to *appropriate* funds.

The CIC has exclusive control of the military. The executive branch has exclusive control over all matters of foreign policy.

Where does the senate fit into all of this?
