Trump privately presses for U.S. military to pay for border wall

President Donald Trump, who repeatedly insisted during the 2016 campaign that Mexico would pay for a wall along the southern border, is privately pushing the U.S. military to fund construction of his signature project.

Trump has told advisers that he was spurned in a large spending bill last week when lawmakers appropriated only $1.6 billion for the border wall. He has suggested to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and congressional leaders that the Pentagon could fund the sprawling project, citing a "national security" risk.

After floating the notion to several advisers last week, Trump told House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., that the military should pay for the wall, according to three people familiar with the meeting last Wednesday in the White House residence. Ryan offered little reaction to the idea, these people said, but senior Capitol Hill officials later said it was an unlikely prospect.

Trump's pursuit of defense dollars to finance the U.S.-Mexico border wall underscores his determination to fulfill a campaign promise and build the barrier despite resistance in the Republican-led Congress. The administration's last-minute negotiations with lawmakers to secure billions more for the wall failed, and Trump grudgingly signed the spending bill Friday after a short-lived veto threat.

It is the presidents constitutional duty to secure the border, his order would be covered and perfectly legal.

I agree, but after the whole immigration fiasco (which also was within the President's legal right), I'm not sure courts would allow him to spend the money that way...

Have the military engineers build the wall. That border crossing is a huge threat. I just taught a class to emergency responders with a guy on border security detail, HE SAID BUILD THE DAMN WALL.

I’d sacrifice some of what little vacation time I get to do something useful helping to build the wall.

As a military facility, even if being built by contractors, the wall becomes a security zone protected by armed military guards from leftists intent on sabotage. The zone becomes the same as any military base requiring security.

Since the military zone needs protection, invaders can be detained and become subject to military law that has precedence over the civil law. Invaders can be arrested and hauled back across the border by the army that is certain there will be no Mexican military resistance.

That's what I was thinking.

This has to be a leak, because it makes no sense for DJT to show his hand this way.

Anyone grade school age or older should know how the media, courts and the Democrats (but I repeat myself) would react to this.

A full-frontal, 24/hour screeching assault on the "illegal, unconstitutional" use of defense money.

His best course of action would be to just do it, to hell with announcing it.

Somebody on Mattis’s staff leaked to WaPoo. Based on his track record so far as SecDef I see no chance he wants a dog in the wall fight. He is mainline careerist Deep State as far as I am concerned. He’s punted on every controversial issue so far. The proof is in the pudding.

I believe its referred to as “reprogramming”. The Congress authorizes and appropriates. The appropriations side gives money to the agencies in many different “pots” (e.g., R&D, Production, Military Construction, Military pay, etc). If the Administration wants to shift money between pots, they have the authority to do so up to certain limits (relatively low) without any other approval. Above those limits they need Congressional approval. This may be what that post referred to.

“President Trump does not need to press this. He can ORDER the military to build the wall.It is the presidents constitutional duty to secure the border, his order would be covered and perfectly legal.”

That’s the way I see it, too. Trump should order the wall built with the funds appropriated to the military ASAP as a national emergency measure. If Mattis is not on board, Mattis should be removed.

The wall is already being built:

Replacing sections where a wall already exists is hardly actually building the fully required wall.

“You campaigned on Mexico paying for it.”

AND THEY WILL!

There are a myriad of ways to make Mexico pay.

I don’t care if they pay us back instead of pay us up front.

BUILD THE WALL! BUILD THE WALL! BUILD THE WALL!

I don’t even care if Mexico pays us back or not, but THEY WILL, in one way or another because Trump said they would.

Mattis and the rest of the careerists in DOD will fight him tooth and nail on the wall. They want no dog in the wall fight.

This is why it’s so important Trump wins a second term. This is going to be a LONG WAR.

This Vet says we need to pull in our military forces from places around the world where they’re not needed anymore, and use the military and all of that technology and manpower to beef up our infrastructure and build the wall.

That is all. :)
