Trump privately presses for U.S. military to pay for border wall
Chicago Tribune ^

President Donald Trump, who repeatedly insisted during the 2016 campaign that Mexico would pay for a wall along the southern border, is privately pushing the U.S. military to fund construction of his signature project.

Trump has told advisers that he was spurned in a large spending bill last week when lawmakers appropriated only $1.6 billion for the border wall. He has suggested to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and congressional leaders that the Pentagon could fund the sprawling project, citing a "national security" risk.

After floating the notion to several advisers last week, Trump told House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., that the military should pay for the wall, according to three people familiar with the meeting last Wednesday in the White House residence. Ryan offered little reaction to the idea, these people said, but senior Capitol Hill officials later said it was an unlikely prospect.

Trump's pursuit of defense dollars to finance the U.S.-Mexico border wall underscores his determination to fulfill a campaign promise and build the barrier despite resistance in the Republican-led Congress. The administration's last-minute negotiations with lawmakers to secure billions more for the wall failed, and Trump grudgingly signed the spending bill Friday after a short-lived veto threat.

The inverted priority of funding the military for national security before funding the wall is a piss poor excuse.

That depends on what the military is doing at the given time, doesn't it?

We're possibly about to have a much more fundamental situation with Congress than how they vote on any issue. What happens to checks and balances when half of Congress is justifiably incarcerated?

Trump could have vetoed the spending plan and asked for changes. Congress would have made changes all right. Chop up the military budget

Trump privately presses for U.S. military to pay for border wall>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

President Trump does not need to press this. He can ORDER the military to build the wall.It is the presidents constitutional duty to secure the border, his order would be covered and perfectly legal.

By the rino’s in congress and their last minute screwing of PDJT, I see a significant change in the current seat holders in congress coming. Not only did they screw Trump, they have significantly pissed off the “deplorables” and will pay dearly for that. Time to vote the bastards out!

I agree. I wonder how PDJT will have them pointed out this primary season. Its going to be interesting.

I’d love to see Ryan and McConnell gone.

“$2K a month in housing. They live damn well”

Not if you are out of Camp Pendleton like my Marine Capt. Nephew is. $2000 doesn’t cover rent if you have kids and need to move up to a 3 bedroom house. BTW he is back from Iraq on Sunday!! He is the only Marine in an Army Camp.

You campaigned on Mexico paying for it.

Trade agreements and other methods (after the wall is built), will cost Mexico lots of money - they will have paid for this wall.

Don't tell me that you were one of the people who thought that Trump was suggesting that Mexico was just going to write us a check to build a wall to keep their money-staved minions from invading us and sending said money back to Mexico.

Bad idea. Military funds need to be spent on the weapons and manpower needs of our underfunded military. As for immigration, the wall would be good, but statutory restrictions would be much better and cost taxpayers nothing.

Me thinks that our chess playing President is going at this all wrong.

Just USE the military to build the wall and do not even try to TAKE the money from the military and say it is for the wall. Just let them, procure, engineer and construct it. Problems solved.

Forget about your promise to your base about getting Mehico to pay for it. We will write that off as just another campaign lie like, ehhhhh that you will prosecute Hillary.

I don’t know Prez Trump personally, but I voted for him because he is a businessman. The passage of this “budget” struck me as being totally out of character for him, and I told a friend earlier in the week that I believe “Trump has something up his sleeve.”

This may be it. He is too savvy for the Dems, and because of that, he scares the living daylights out of them. THAT’s why they are trying to besmirch him in every way.

I pray for his strength often, and I know he is a strong man. He has not stopped working to head off the A’ho’s at the pass...

(That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.)
