5 things to watch for in the Illinois primary

In one of ABC News’ “18 for '18” races, the fight for the identity of the Democratic Party between its progressive and establishment wings has spilled into Illinois 3rd Congressional District where Blue Dog Democrat Dan Lipinski is facing a challenge from activist Marie Newman, who has the backing of Sen. Bernie Sanders, EMILY's List and a handful of labor groups.

Money has dominated the high-profile gubernatorial primaries in the state — $100 million has been spent already on the Republican and Democratic sides.

Gov. Bruce Rauner, likely the most vulnerable GOP incumbent governor in the nation, has been dogged by a budget crisis and sagging approval ratings. J.B. Pritzker, the heir to the Hyatt Hotel fortune, has emerged as the front-runner on the Democratic side, setting up a multi-million versus billionaire battle that could be the most expensive gubernatorial race of the cycle.

Democrats are also sorting out primaries in a number of congressional districts both in the Chicago suburbs and downstate that are expected to be competitive come November.

In a continuation of a national trend emerging in 2018, female candidates have emerged as contenders in congressional races across the state, a sign that the 'pink wave' may continue its rise Tuesday night.

The Dems have great choices in the primaries. You can choose a crook carpetbagger-Kennedy, A crook but our crook Chicago style-Pritzker or a strait up Socialist-Biss. What a pathetic state!!!

I’m curious as to how the Dem primary in IL-03 is gonna go.

Dan Lipinski, a Blue Dog Democrat - probably the last of them, is being challenged by Marie Newman, a credible far left candidate.

I suspect that Rauner will win the primary - but not overwhelmingly. He needs at least 70% to make it look good. Otherwise, a less than stellar win could leave him crippled for November.

Me too and same for my wife.
Probably cutting our own throat, but I am so tired of these half assed republicans so it was mostly just a defiant gesture.

Do you really think any republican is going to win in the general election?? Even if it was close the crooks in Chicago will steal it. We are now the California of the midwest. Either accept your fate or move. So many of my friends either have moved or are planning to move including me. I just have to buy my time and put things in order then Indiana here I come.

The same is on the Republican side in West Virginia. We might actually have a felon win the primary. Yikes.
