Indonesian Christians flogged outside of mosque for violating sharia law

Indonesia publicly caned two Christians in a rare case of non-Muslims punished under sharia law.

The two Indonesian Christians – Dahlan Silitonga, 61, and Tjia Nyuk Hwa, 45 – were whipped six and seven times respectively by a masked man wearing a robe, as a crowd of 300 ridiculed and took pictures of them outside a mosque in the provincial capital, Banda Aceh.

The strict Islamic law punishment against the Christian man and woman comes as the predominently Muslim country shifts to a more radical, politicized version of Islam, Reuters reported.

The pair – among five people punished – was accused of gambling. Police said they were playing a game at a children’s entertainment complex that lets users exchange coins for prizes or vouchers, including cash. They were beaten with a rattan stick, while another man involved with them got 19 lashes.

Another couple was whipped two dozen times for showing affection in public.

Banda Aceh is the only province in Indonesia that imposes sharia law since it was adopted in 2001 as part of a deal with the central government to end a long-running insurgency. The province has flogged its non-Muslim citizens for a range of offenses – from gambling to selling alcohol to having gay or extramarital sex.

“This is to create a deterrent effect, in order for people not to repeat violations of Islamic sharia law,” Banda Aceh’s mayor Aminullah Usman said. “We purposely do it in front of the public ... so it won’t happen again.”

Normal AWANA kind of stuff. You want to reward the kids for memorizing scripture or a story from the bible, give them a fake coin or ticket to redeem with a toy, food or in this case, a low denomination piece of currency.

There was no “gambling”, the kids had to earn the prize.

This story will be picked up by every major news source in the United States. The media loves to report on how underdogs and minorities are abused.

Oh, wait a minute. The victims here were Christians. Never mind. Cue the ‘Man Says Something Mean to a Transgender’ story instead.

AFAIK, The only place ‘gambling’ is even mentioned in the Bible, is in the New Testament, where the Roman soldiers gambled to see who got Jesus’ robe, and that was to preserve it whole.................

Exactly. The muzzie men do what they want when they want, including rape young boys, while beating everyone else into submission to make them follow the “rules”.

When we were in Bali just before 911, locals said Indonesia Muslims were fairly peaceful until they mandated the trip to Mecca.

As soon as they got back, they were changed and became much more violent.
“Year of Living Dangerously” shows some of the change in Indonesia.

We felt fairly safe in Bali until we went to more Muslim areas.
We stayed at a Swiss owned resort in NW part of Bali and were afraid to leave after a short hike around the area.

1. you are correct. There was would have been superficially fair to distribute the robe by dividing it, so they had a fair game of chance, to preserve its value.

2. Here is another similar instance: Joshua then cast lots for them in Shiloh in the presence of the LORD, and there he distributed the land to the Israelites according to their tribal divisions. Joshua 18:10. This fulfilled Number 26:55. This demonstrates that a fair game of chance is acceptable to God for allotting things that are not divisible.

The larger point is that chance, good and bad luck, are part of life. Also, that you don’t want to be stupid about fairness. Don’t destroy value to be fair.

With this in mind, we can appreciate the trick of Solomon in proposing to cut the baby in two in order to be fair to the two women each claiming to be the baby’s mother. He only made the proposition to have the real mother reveal herself.

Having said these things, there is such a thing as gambling addiction. While most people can gamble in moderation, and do so as part of a productive and happy life, there are some who essentially make gambling into a false god.

Well, Elijah kind of made a “bet” with the prophets of Baal in the Old Testament. Of course he knew that his God would win, so it wasn’t much of a gamble.

How about flogging Muslims here who don’t comply with U.S. laws? Turnabout is fair play.

Flogging for showing affection in public. I guess they prefer showing hate. Just what I would expect from a Satanic religion.

If we treated them by their own laws, they would be allowed to murder, rape and steal from anyone but a Muslim. I say just deport them all. Anyone American who chooses to join a religion based on murdering others who is from America needs to be locked in a mental hospital because they are violently bat Shiite crazy and is a danger to others.

Drawing lots was often seen as gambling as well in ancient times. But it also was used as a form of Cleromancy. (Acts of the Apostles 1:23–26).
