Tarps must come down from Confederate statues, judge says

The City of Charlottesville will soon be ordered to remove the black tarps currently covering two Confederate statues downtown.

Reading from an official court letter Tuesday afternoon, Charlottesville Circuit Court Judge Richard Moore said he thinks the shrouds on the statues of Gens. Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson are a violation of a state code protecting the removal or disturbance of war memorials.

Moore said the city will have 15 days to remove the tarps after an official order has been signed.

Didn’t he take his name and deeds from the public record before he became president?

A country that had started with the ostensible thesis that it was about God acted more and more like it was about men.

The religious roots of this country were extremely weak. They had to add a religious element to it because otherwise they couldn't justify the American Revolution at all. The King of England wasn't just a civil ruler; he was also the head of the Church of England.

That's why religion had almost no role -- other than legal protection against the establishment of an official national religion -- in the founding of the country.

Countdown to a judge in the Ninth Circuit Court to over rule this. Doesn’t matter that this is not in their jurisdiction...

Ok. ENFORCE IT.

the majority of Americans will rightly continue to see the Southerners as noble heroes who fought for their families and communities.

Probably the least informed statement I have read here in a long time.

No it was more than just slavery.

But can you see the impossibility of living next to a country where certain people aren’t even viewed as people, but expensive cattle? And in the country right next to them these same people are free peoples?

There were already raids from those states into the nearby states to take people back with them as slaves. No reason to think this would stop after secesion and a new nation of states was formed as they were doing it before secession.

There can be good reasons for secession. Wanting the right to keep certain people as property isn’t a good one.

In more cynical moments I wonder if colonial faith was everything it was cracked up to be.

Nonetheless there were bright flashes of faith in the founding days.

*The religious roots of this country were extremely weak.”

I’m astounded at that statement. Had it not been for religion, of numerous flavors, from New England meeting houses in 1600 to the backwoods of NC/TN 50 years later where Lutherans and Baptists built their meeting houses, there would have been no Great Awakening, no challenge to the divine right of a king, no revolution at all. And certainly no concept of Inalienable Rights granted from God.

The Civil War did not start over slavery.

Maybe not, but it finished over slavery.

It even finished slavery.

That's why religion had almost no role -- other than legal protection against the establishment of an official national religion -- in the founding of the country.

That depends on what you mean by "the founding of the country."

And the reason religion may not have played a role in writing the Constitution is that there were several different, strong, conflicting religious denominations and traditions.

The Founders had a way of not talking about things that could be divisive.

Missed one: It finished the Republic.

And, finally, I truly wish the ‘Civil War’ misnomer would DIE. The CSA wasn’t fighting over-throw the North, they were fighting their OWN ‘War of Independence’. Even the ‘War of Northern Aggression’ isn’t correct.

Bad enough the shit & downright lies they feed most K-12, they have to pervert the English language at the same time.

/peev rant off

But, yes, I do believe Lincoln and that war were the start of the fall of the Republic. Hell, even 100yrs ago The People still talked of ‘States of the Union’, our Republic...even IF they were voting in the Leftists that would rip the last of the visages asunder. They’d have been aghast, and hopefully ASHAMED, of what we have become today.

The slavery issue was a tactical maneuver by the north to gain a sanctimonious high ground, and it worked. Eli Whitney did more to actually free slaves than President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.

I liked your rant.

So the southerners who rebelled - and proudly said it was over slavery - were “leftards”?

“So the southerners who rebelled - and proudly said it was over slavery - were “leftards”?”

No, but people who think the wartime bluster of a *few* slaveholders represents the thinking of the whole Confederacy have been deceived by leftards.

And there’s no justification for putting “leftards” in danger quotes. It is both accurate and appropriate.

Since there were no polls there can be no consensus of “the whole Confederacy” but it was clearly the sentiment of the leadership that slavery was their primary motivation. I don’t think that they were “leftards” - just wrong.

“but it was clearly the sentiment of the leadership that slavery was their primary motivation.”

That is only clear in the rewritten history perpetrated by the left. They got you. They sucked you in. They lied to you, and not only did you believe them, you still do. On this issue, you are as disinformed as some soccer mom who thinks gun control is the answer to school shootings.

“I don’t think that they were “leftards”

Not them; the leftards are the ones who rewrote the history of that period for the purpose of deceiving as many as they could.

People hate to be told stuff like this. People want to think, “I’m smart; if they had been lying to me I’d have seen through it.”

No matter how kindly you try to tell them that the left got them with fake news or fake history, most people just take it as an attack on their intelligence.

No, the history you were taught is the rewritten history.
