With the gun debate in full force after the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last week, one Democrat representative admitted to using incorrect terminology for firearms.
Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., was confronted for his use the term “assault rifle” to talk about the AR-15, and he responded on Twitter.
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, assault rifles “can be set for automatic or semiautomatic fire.” Assault rifles have also been banned to the public since 1934, according to Independent Journal Review.
One Twitter user pointed out the representative’s mistake, and Lieu responded: “I will keep saying assault rifle if I feel like it. I will not let you define what I can or cannot say.”

I don't think assault rifles had been invented in 1934. I think the terminology originated from the StG 44, or Sturmgewehr 44. Sturmgewehr means "storm rifle" as in "to storm (i.e., assault) an enemy position". The 44 comes from 1944.
It would correct to say that purchasing a fully automatic weapon has required an abundance of paperwork, background checks and payment of a $200 tax since the National Firearms Act of 1934.

And there is your problem chief. AR-15s, AS MANUFACTURED AND PURCHASED, have only two settings and neither of them are AUTOMATIC. Therefore, they are not assault rifles because they cannot be set to "semi-automatic OR automatic". Bite me Lieuy.

I really wish we’d drop the silly semantic argument about “assault” weapons. The left knows which one it wants to ban, and we have much better arguments to make. If all you can say is “it’s not an assault weapon because it isn’t select fire,” please just keep your mouth shut.
