America has two gun cultures: Don't blame law-abiding gun owners for murders

Florida school shooting reignites the debate over background checks and mental health and guns.

When a mass murder happens in our country, like so many Americans I wring my hands and look for answers – for anything that will stop these monsters. I don’t like to speak out at these times, because as Ecclesiastes correctly tells us there is “a time to every purpose under the heaven,” including “a time to mourn.”

But then someone kicks me in the shin.

This time it was CNN media reporter Brian Stelter, saying on CNN’s “New Day” program Wednesday that the National Rifle Association and gun owners don’t want to tell the truth about guns.

No, the truth that is many in the media refuse to cover the truth about guns and the gun cultures in America. They don’t want to admit there are two wildly different gun cultures in our country. One is the freedom-loving, gun-rights culture that upholds the responsible use of guns for hunting, sport and self-defense. The other is the criminal culture that thrives in the places where government restricts gun rights.

Not acknowledging that the two cultures exist separately, and instead pretending legal gun owners are responsible for crimes committed by the illegal gun culture in America, isn’t just a lie. It is getting good people killed.

In the most recent mass murder last week at a Florida high school, where 14 students and three adults were killed, the FBI failed in its responsibility – not guns or gun owners. That was hardly an anomaly. In many other cases a murderer should have been denied legal access to guns, but the bureaucracy failed us.

Wow, this article calls out LEO at Columbine High School, CO & the Pulse nightclub in FL, stating that law enforcement had their own safety in mind and didn't react to stop the carnage. So if you can't count on the law and you better be ready to defend yourself.

The media wants to convince America’s > 100 million law-abiding gun owners that they're to blame for murders. They need to stop blaming gun owners for criminal acts and the mentally ill that murder.

How about the gun culture on the south and west sides of Chicago? Why do we seldom hear the liberals decry the gun violence in our ghettos? Why do we seldom hear them condemn the youth gangs who have laid waste to large sections of many major cities?

does anyone care, that far more innocents are killed by the youth gangs in Chicago and other cities, than get killed by school shootings?

Does anyone care, that sadly, passing more and more laws will not stop the criminal element, which by definition don’t obey laws?

Does anyone care, that this shooter, and others, were already in violation of numerous gun laws even before they started their shooting rampages?

As long as the political/media class keep clinging to their 1960s era anti gun jihad, nothing will be done. The problem is trying to “mainstream” the dangerously mentally ill. Currently the political/media class is busy arguing over which band aid to put on a sucking chest wound

Like the point I made to someone on FB: law abiding persons in places like Vermont, Texas, Montana, Maine, New Hampshire, the Dakotas, Wyoming, Arizona, and elsewhere like that live under very casual firearms laws (particularly Vermont) and simply are not committing crimes and certainly not violent ones. The violent criminals, be it in Chicago, DC, Detroit, Cleveland, Dallas, New Orleans, Atlanta, New York City, etc are by their very nature as criminals committing the violent offences regardless of how strict (particularly DC, Chicago, and New York) the firearms laws are.

The media very seldom if ever discuss the above and also seldom discuss what does takes place in the inner city areas like corrupt political systems, drug abuse, illiteracy, and generations of welfare mothers and poverty. Confronting these things would far more effectively deal with the violent criminal culture in places ranging from New York City and DC to Atlanta and New Orleans than the silly gesture politics of ineffective gun control.

THE PLAN

Step 1 - Take guns away from law abiding gun owners to stop criminals

Step 2 - Take cars away from sober people to stop drunk drivers

Step 3 - Take prescription medications away from sick people to stop drug abusers

Agreed. Cruz is dangerously mentally ill and has been for a very long time. His online declarations of murder were challenges and calls for attention and help. He got none.

From what we know, he was a disturbed child and was not helped by the system. If he was born with (FAS) there is a lot of therapy (not drugs) that needs to happen very early < age 10 and adolescence. That fact that his adoptive mother wanted to ‘send him away’ by the time he was 6 is rather telling.

Had his father not died and had the school helped him there could have been a much different outcome. He needed a highly structured environment with minimal stressors. He may have turned out some what function-able, but we will never know.

If nothing else, I hope his infamous rampage focuses attention on the outcome of mental health left untreated. At the very least, he should have been contained. Save a buck in mental health just cost the county millions.

As much as some don’t want to acknowledge, there are 2 gun “cultures” : black vs white.

The PTB took his kid brother and put him in for observation.

No word I’ve seen how that turned out.

AMERICA HAS THREE GUN CULTURES

  1. Freedom-loving American gun owners who uphold the responsible use of guns for hunting, sport and self-defense

  2. A criminal culture that thrives in the places where government restricts gun rights

  3. Sheriff Deputies who are armed with guns but cower seek cover in the presence of a live shooter

About the south side of Chicago ... likewise, I wonder why no one cares that THOSE kids get killed. They are still created in the image of God, somebody’s baby, somebody’s grandchild ... shaking my head.
