The sheriff’s deputy who failed to engage the shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School “believed he did a good job” because he called in the location of the massacre and gave a description of the shooter, a top union official said Thursday.
School resource officer Scot Peterson, who resigned in disgrace from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, was “distraught” about shooting that killed 17 people — but believed he did his duty, according to the president of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputies Association.
“He believed he did a good job calling in the location, setting up the perimeter and calling in the description (of Cruz),” said the union official, Jim Bell.

Although I see your point and I also wonder what I'd do, but as far as ID'ing the perp while the shooting is going on, the perp in this case is probably the pimply-faced guy on the other end of the rifle.
Cracks me up...Securityman...LOL If you have never been in a live fire situation, you..most of you.. don’t know what your talking about. There are rules of engagement. You do no one any good going in gun(s)blazing, when you don’t know where the perp is, what he has for fire power, where your back up is, when it will arrive, where they will arrive, if they will arrive, and if you can safely remove hostages or victims with your weapon to protect them as they leave the crime scene. He had 7 minutes total to access the situation. That is NOT a lot of time, then take into consideration your age, physical condition, skill with a firearm (many police NEVER fire their weapon while on duty), and if your honest, fear factors we all share of getting killed. But I prefer to believe that he was helping kids escape with weapon drawn to protect them. WE DON’T KNOW...and all the dirty harrys out there cannot say with certainty, that they would not have behaved in a similar manner. I have seen it first hand. Many police arrive 8 minutes after shooting begins because statistically, the shooters have resolved the issue or are dead. I would also point out the elephant in the room. In this small community no other officers showed up to help this one for over 10 minutes. By this time, the shooter had ditched his weapons, blended into the crowd, and left the scene. How is it possible that not ONE of these students did not recognize the shooter and tell the police when he left the campus??? Not one child had been injured in the area this sheriffs deputy was at, and the shooter left in a different exit. What is clear is that the court of public opinion has found its Judas, and passed judgment without knowing the facts.
All that is left is for the Police Chief to blame this officer, divert blame actually, to cover the departments ass. Why else would he be allowed to resign, with impunity, and draw retirement pay? If he had really done something wrong, they could have fired him, and denied his pay, or at least have to go to court to fight it. No, there is definitely more to the story, and the fault lies squarely on the shoulders of those who should have responded to back up the Office. It is insane to expect one officer to enter the building with a hand gun, against a shooter with .223 rounds and a large magazine. Seeking a target of opportunity, an advantageous shot to take him out would be smart. Once the officer fired, The shooter when being fired upon would quickly rack up kills IMO rather than random pot shots if he thought he would be taken out. The kid went into a Gun Free Zone and took out innocents, he was a coward. That gives NO ONE license to demand the officer unwisely sacrifice his life when no backup was forthcoming.

The cops and the school were under an agreement to ignore teen criminal activity at school. The tape delay was to make sure if there was a crime - they could erase the tape as necessary.

Of course it is, just so they get to go home in one piece, blah, blah, blah. In the case of Sandy Hook, how is a bunch of 6 and 7 year olds wearing tanktops a threat to the police. Really, I speak from experience, other than what you HEARD, what do you know first hand? What I said agrees with your second statement. I don’t even think you read my post.
At this point I’d put little faith in anything said or attributed to any
of those involved. At some point it should get ironed out with penalities.

The same information could just as easily been provided by the students. If he got that description by actually seeing the perp firsthand, what actions did he take to pursue him?
He set up a perimiter, because as in the case of the Orlando 'Pulse' shooting, the 'perp' was shot and killed as he was exiting the building, while trying to take out other victims.

It was just minutes after Orlando police were called about the gunfire, and law enforcement officers began descending on the club.
Four of them entered the building through one patio, while six others shot out a window to get inside. Among the 10 officers who went into Pulse, some had powerful military-style rifles and one had a shield. At least two had tactical experience.
Police fired at Mateen when he popped his head out of one of the bathrooms. The shooter was outgunned and outnumbered.
But then, police decided not to pursue him.
This account, based on interviews with law enforcement officials and witnesses, as well as public records, provides the most complete picture yet of the law enforcement response and Mateen’s movements inside the club on the night of the attack.
The new details raise questions about how police and fire agencies responded to what became the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history — and how the attack turned into a hostage standoff that lasted nearly three hours.
The decision not to follow Mateen into the bathroom proved critical. Because Mateen was not subdued or killed sooner, wounded victims remained trapped inside the bathroom for hours, pleading for the police to rescue them. Emergency medical personnel did not enter the club to treat victims, because it was deemed too dangerous. And during the final standoff, in which police initially failed to breach the club wall and struggled to make entry, Mateen apparently shot more people, according to witnesses.
At least five people who were alive in the bathrooms when the standoff began ultimately died at the club, witnesses and relatives said. Three of these people — Deonka Deidra Drayton, Eddie Justice and Alejandro Barrios Martinez — sent text messages from inside the club’s bathrooms and were later among the dead.
