Wealthy New Yorkers Fight To Keep Homeless Out Of Their Liberal Neighborhood
Daily Caller ^ | 2/9/18 | Peter Hasson

Wealthy New Yorkers are furious that Mayor Bill de Blasio plans to open a homeless shelter in their ritzy Manhattan neighborhood.

Dozens of wealthy residents packed into a community meeting to voice their anger over the decision to move 150 homeless men into the former Park Savoy Hotel, NY1 reports. The residents are concerned that the move will increase crime and decrease property values in their neighborhood on “billionaires row.”

“How are these poor people, whose only livelihood is in one bag, deal with a $6 coffee and a $15,000 dress on the windows of Fifth Avenue?” asked one resident, a middle-aged man with a foreign accent. “Aren’t we breeding crime by doing this?” he asked, earning applause from the audience.

Some residents have formed a group, the West 58th Street Coalition, to oppose the homeless shelter in their neighborhood, CBS2 reports. CBS2 identified the coalition’s leader as Suzanne Silverstein, a fashion executive who is the president of upscale women’s fashion line Parker NY, according to her Linkedin profile.

“This is a tourist area. Can you imagine you are like next door, you have the best hotels in New York City, you destroy that in order to help 150 people,” said restaurant owner Maria Loi, according to CBS2. The New York Times has described Loi as a “celebrity chef.”

NY1 reports that some residents have hired a public relations expert and a lawyer in their fight to keep homeless people out of their neighborhood. It’s unclear if that group is the same as the West 58th Street Coalition.

One resident suggested that de Blasio is moving the homeless into the wealthy neighborhood to get at President Trump. “I think it’s crazy. I think he just wants to get to Trump,” Leonardo DeVega told CBS2. “His son lives across the street, and Trump lives a block away.”

Manhattan residents overwhelmingly supported Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump in the 2016 election, giving her more than 86 percent of the vote.

I don’t blame them.

Obama wanted to introduce the poor into every neighborhood.

Not a good idea.

People have invested in their homes and neighborhoods.

I’m not exactly sure why DeBlasio did this outside of the fact that he’s an enormous dope. Those are his voters, it is in the middle of a tourist area, and it is a very beautiful, ritzy, interesting area which doesn’t need homeless drug addicts and maniacs screwing up the neighborhood. But then, again, he’s a really big dummy. Why can’t he put them up in his Bk’lyn neighborhood or in Gracie Mansion?

I wish I knew. I don’t THINK even DeBlasio is going to haul in 150 random bums. He’s going to choose. Still, the choosers are a question.

I would be surprised if this liberal enclave recognizes its own hypocrisy. Open borders, chain migration, protection of DACA “children” and more are all liberal talking points. As long as the impact of their virtue signaling is felt elsewhere, all is right with the world.

Why, from handsome handouts from you and yours when thay panhandle. $100 a pop ought to do it.

Your compassion (slip) is showing.

what?! Manhattan wants a wall?

One thing for sure, any object over a foot tall will soon be tagged as the wemmen and their yutes move in behind the men

but hey - open borders for east coast cities too! Why should the west coast have all the fun?

Destroying property values helps no one.

Creating a slum where a power community used to be, doesn’t help Conservatives. It just drives down city revenue.

For 20+ years I lived in a very affluent, and "progressive",suburb. While I was there there was a proposal to put a small "affordable housing" complex on some open land in the town.

Well,I'll bet that most Freepers can figure out what happened after the announcement...OUTRAGE!

"Think of the children",these rich "progressives" would say."The traffic would be dangerous" was another cry.

But the problem was that our state legislature, which has been 90% Maoist for decades, had years earlier passed legislation demanding that towns like ours be opened up to slum housing...open to "the most vulnerable among us".

The outcry over this proposal was really fun to watch!

Also, anyone with some free time should google "Commonwealth Day School" and "Cambridge" (as in Massachusetts) for a juicy story of racism by,among others,Julia Child and Laurence Tribe."Funny" and "disgusting" don't even begin to describe the story.

I have a family member whose community just became a favorite spot for an encampment.

These folks now roam the neighborhood looking for things that aren’t nailed down.

Crime is rising. It’s a mess.

Folks with young kids, particularly girls, it would be hard to go to work knowing these types were loitering.

This could easily tank a neighborhood’s values in a matter of months if not addressed.

I see circular arguments and begged questions. Surely we may permit liberals to be liberal and not be THEIR nannies. Do we believe in buildings uber alles?

That sounds like something from that satire website The Onion. But then again, everything a liberal says sounds like it came from The Onion.
